3 Boats, Kingswear, Dartmouth
Aug 25, 2020
Watercolor 15" x 11"
A bit of an imaginary one this. Just taking the outline of some buildings and loosely basing the composition on a view towards Kingswear on the other side of the river Dart from Dartsmouth. I'm going for a fairly calm scene here and a touch of bright light ober in the distance to the right.

Bergerac and Bridge over River Dordogne
Aug 24, 2020
Watercolor 15" x 11"
The bridge over the river that gave its name to the region of Dordogne in South West France. My source photo had no bridge reflections to talk of. Photos can be quite boring and uninteresting. So I made more of a feature of the reflections, lifted the horizon a bit and introduced a small rowing boat as a focal point

Willow Tree - Yate Rocks
Aug 19, 2020
A well-known 'beauty spot' near to where I live called Yate Rocks. It's out from the main town and a narrow 'Ford' (a shallow place in a river or stream allowing one to walk or drive across) surrounded by some pretty cottages. My first attempt at painting a willow tree with its long pendulous branches.
Staithes Out to Sea
Jul 21, 2020
Staithes, North Yorkshire, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
A composition I have done before...but I just changed the direction of the boat. For me, this sort of scene has everything. A light value background kept really simple. Then some middle ground interest with shadows to give form and depth. And top it off with some reflections.

Flat brush and 3-colour palette painting
Jun 11, 2020
River Tamar, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
...Well 4 colours if I can include neutral tint as another colour. So a flat brush used for most of this painting and pre-wet the paper to get the soft glow of the morning light in the sky and water. Colours were ultramarine blue, lemon yellow and a winsor red.....plus neutral tint.
Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Jetty and misty morning at Saltash
May 27, 2020
Saltash, Cornwall, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
A bit of imaginary one this one, apart from the jetty - it soes exist down there. I really enjoy doing these atmospheric ones - pre-wetting the paper and then laying down the first wash, leaving a bright area on the horizon. As regards the horizon - leave it out. Just transition slowly from sky to sea with a subtle change in colour.

Misty Morning River Tamar
Dec 27, 2019
River Tamar, UK, 15" x 11" Watercolor
Inspired by a bit of Claude Buckle, I attempted this misty scene on the River Tamar. A limited palette and concentrating on values and the simple silhouette shape of the boats and their reflections. Water reflections are best done with a mop brush with a good point/edge.
Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms
Uphill Marina - River Axe #2
Dec 14, 2019
Uphill Marina, UK, 15" x 11"
A second painting of the River Axe at low tide as it winds its way around and into the Bristol Channel. More boats appearing 'stranded' high up on the river banks. Quite a reddish tinge to the mud here making it quite attractive to paint and a bit of warmth against the cools.
Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.
Bristol Savages SWAT evening painting - Staithes N Yorkshire
Sep 02, 2019
Staithes, N Yorkshire, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
Painted during a recent evening at my art society, The Bristol Savages, this is a made-up scene of the footbridge over the Beck in the pretty village of Staithes, well like by artists as a location to paint plein air. I have painted this scene some 4 or 5 years ago and the main house of the other side of the river was a bright turquoise colour. I decided to change that and make the focus the shape of the boat pointing downstream.
Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.
