Figure and Dog Castillon-la-Bataille, France

Figure and dog Castillon-la-Bataille

Castillon-la-Bataille, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Simple scene, could be anywhere...but this is...Castillon-la-Bataille in the Gironde area of South West France.  Some old buildings maybe needing some paint, but I think that look is quite attractive.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Rue de Ble, Cherbourg, France

Rue au Ble Cherbourg France

Cherbourg, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A recent painting painted with one brush - a large synthetic blend brush from Lebenzon.  First time I used this large brush and new brushes take a few paintings to get used to how they handle, how much paint they can take, the marks they make, etc...  One benefit of using one brush for the whole job - you don't need to keep thinking "shall I change my brush now" when painting different areas or stages of the process.  Keeps it simple and the momentum going when timing is very important in watercolour.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Red Car, Livorno

Red car livorno

Livorno, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Not being very imaginative with titles, I just had to call this one 'red car Livorno'.  This is south of the centre of Livorno, almost where the lido starts.  A sharp corner in the road and a contre jour looking West and some strong afternoon sunlight.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Ibiza Town, Ibiza

Ibiza town ibiza

Ibiza, Spain, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Well I guess most watercolour painters would ideally paint a bright sunny day on a location like Ibiza.  However, I went with an overcast, yet bright day.  The main challenge of which are lack of shadows and a small narrow range of values which sometimes does not work in watercolor.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Washing day Livorno

Washing day livorno

Watercolour 15" x 11"

I feel a washing day theme coming on.  hot on the heels of my Vernazza washing day, here's one from Livorno a bit further down the coast.  Maybe a misplaced red car - I normally recommend not having parts of vehicles going off the side, but it sort of works here I think and the parking road marks help take the eye onwards to the building.  I started with two figures on the left, but 2 more 'appeared' on the right after random lighter areas were left from the initial washes.
