Couple of demos to Corsham Art Society
Jun 12, 2020
A couple of watercolour demos to Corsham Art Society earlier in the year, before lockdown! They are two views almost from the same spot - one looking down the High Street from the Post Office and the other one looking up the lane to the local church. Both painted in under an hour each, with commentary along the way!
Demo painting to Bristol Art Group - Theatre Royal Bath
May 04, 2020
Bath, UK, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
A recent demo, well last year, to the Bristol Art Group in a workshop format. So I did the demo in stages like my online workshops making it easy to follow my step by step approach. The subject here was the Theatre Royal in Bath and a bit of Contra Jour

A couple of Plein Air paintings from trip to village of Steeple Ashton
Jan 24, 2020
The Long Arms, Steeple Ashton.
The main pub in the village (nice menu!) and some convenient shade on the opposite side of the street to paint from. Lovely imposing building and some benches outside with the pub sign
So second plein air done just before lunch in the pub, was a real quickie looking up the village and a contra jour shot.

Saint John's Place, Bath
Jul 09, 2019
Bath, UK, 15" x 11"
A view down St John's Place in Bath. Lovely buildings I think in the Georgian Style, and quite a challenge to get the stonework the correct colour. It's a busy area, being near to the Theatre Royal, so needs a few people wandering about.

Grand Parade Bath from Pulteney Bridge
May 08, 2019
Bath, UK, 15" x 11"
A view up/down Grand Parade in Bath, from Pulteney Bridge (the Bridge is to the left of this scene). Most of the time, a busy street corner with mainly visitors to the city, so I had to put quite a few in. With a group of figures, I try to treat them as one shape - so draw the tops of heads and shoulders first, then the shape of multiple bodies and sizes intermingled.

Timsbury near Bath 2
Jan 02, 2019
Timsbury, UK, 11" x 15"
Another warm up for a demo to the local art group in this village south of Bath. Quite a simple row of cottages with a bit of warm and cool contrasts going on - the warm colour of the road and the cool shadows from the houses. Composition wise, it needed to be portrait orientation I think.

Green Street Bath, looking towards St Michael's Church
Nov 28, 2018
Bath, UK, 15" x 11"
Green Street Bath and a narrow street, very typical in this area and a view up to the spire of St Michael's Church. Quite a loose approach to the buildings on each side of the street. Had to be careful to leave out the whites of the windows on the right, and adding that little triangle of dark just makes it into a window with some bright light hitting it.

St James's Parade, Bath
May 26, 2018
Bath, UK, 15" x 11"
A fairly loose rendition of a typical Bath street, and trying to capture the warm ochre of the stonework. I'm also mixing different silhouetted shapes with the figures coming out of shadows, as I quite often do now, shadows on the far buildings, and some street furniture catching the light and contrasting with the background. I have achieved the soft edge of where the rooftops meet the sky by doing a little wet in wet, with the building was being slightly thicker than the sky wash.

2 almost identical demos on two January workshops
Mar 27, 2018
Bath UK, both 15" x 11"
Two paintings from separate sessions of my January watercolour workshop. Almost like a spot the difference competition, taking the same scene and a demo to two separate audiences. I like the dotted white lines rather than the yellow they are in reality. An example of changing what you see to suit your composition and not copy exactly what's in a photo.
