plein air

A couple of Plein Air paintings from trip to village of Steeple Ashton

Steeple ashton plein air 1

The Long Arms, Steeple Ashton.

The main pub in the village (nice menu!) and some convenient shade on the opposite side of the street to paint from.  Lovely imposing building and some benches outside with the pub sign

Steeple ashton plein air 2

So second plein air done just before lunch in the pub, was a real quickie looking up the village and a contra jour shot.

Both painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms

Sherston Plein Air painting #2

Sherston plein air painting #2

Sherston, Watercolour 15" x 11"

Second Plein Air painting on a summer trip to the pretty village of Sherston.  We don't often get hot days in the UK, but this was quite a warm day, you you had to work quick on the painting.  Luckily I found shady spot number 2, pitched in the shade of a large house looking up this street.

Sherston Plein Air #1

Sherston plein air painting #1

Sherston, UK, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

First plein air of the day at Sherston with the 'Exiles'.  This is looking down Church Street.  Picked this spot primarily because it was in the shade.  I think with watercolour plein air, a key consideration on where/what to paint is 1) get comfortable, then 2) decide from there what to paint..

Monte del Bianchi Plein Air

Last day on my recent trip and we're up in the mountain village of Monte del Bianchi.  Every year I'm there, we seem to always get glorious weather and lovely bright sunshine.  My plein air was from the 'end' of the village.  The monastry/church is behind me (you can just make out the shadow of the cross from it) and we're looking up the village.  There's only one narrow street.  Very peaceful spot and great views of the valleys around.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

This painting is sold.

Il Convento dei Carmine - 2019

Tuscany, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

5th day plein air painting on my recent trip to Tuscany as Tutor at the Watermill.  Thursday is a short trip up the hill to the Il Convento dei Carmine, a privately owned Monastery.  Tricky arches to paint and perspective exercises!

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Market Day Fivizzano 2019

Fivizzano, Italy, Watercolour 15" x 11"

My 3rd day demo on my October trip to Tuscany. here a plein air painting done on Market day in the town of Fivizzano.  You need to work fast here - by midday they're all gone and you have to paint from memory!  I liked the shadows across the scene and the challenge of painting those complicated market stalls.

Painted on Saunders Waterford. Cold Press, 300 gms

Verrucola - Bridge and Castle view - Plein Air from my Tuscany Trip

River valley and bridge Verrucola 2019

Hello everyone.
This was our day 2 location - the castle top village of Verrucola, high up in the hills. We were a bit unlucky with the weather. It rained in the morning, so we were confined to the studio where we painted a scene from Pisa. But after a hearty traditional Italian stew, we painted this pretty scene looking at the main bridge across the river valley and the view of the castle with its bell tower. And the sun made an appearance!

2nd Plein Air painting at the 'WaterMill' - Posara main street and Bell Tower

Watermill posara tuscany 2019 2

Posara, Italy, 15" x 11"

My 2nd Plein air painting at the recent workshop I ran at the 'Watermill in Posara'.  Another plein air painting looking down the main street of the village and the church tower at the end.  Good practice of perspective.
