A spot not too far away from me down on the North Somerset coast.  Another low tide painting.  Low tide, exposing the harbour bed, can be just as interesting as some boat reflections!  Well in this one, best of both worlds with the bridge reflection.

Ronda - Painting on the wrong side of the paper?

Painting on the 'wrong' side of the paper often doesn't matter unless it shows the watermark as in this one.  Sometimes you can hide it by a darker colour, but clear as day here up in the sky.  Often manufacturers state on watercolour paper that you can paint on both sides.  But I find in the manufacturing process, the two sides can be a little different in texture.  Perhaps one side uniform in the texture, and the other more random.  They can produce some subtle differences in outcome, and the way the paint flows.  As long as you know what to expect I guess.

Bergerac and Bridge over River Dordogne

The bridge over the river that gave its name to the region of Dordogne in South West France.  My source photo had no bridge reflections to talk of.  Photos can be quite boring and uninteresting.  So I made more of a feature of the reflections, lifted the horizon a bit and introduced a small rowing boat as a focal point

Willow Tree - Yate Rocks

A well-known 'beauty spot' near to where I live called Yate Rocks.  It's out from the main town and a narrow 'Ford' (a shallow place in a river or stream allowing one to walk or drive across) surrounded by some pretty cottages.  My first attempt at painting a willow tree with its long pendulous branches.

Around the new Venice area of Livorno and the 'Scali del Pontino'.  Lovely stretch of water with boats moored up in every square inch of space along the canal walls.  Lovely umbrella pine trees give it a real Italian feel.

I thought this made a nice composition - with the steps coming down at that angle and then the canal going up, under the bridge.  Another 3-colour painting done with my lightweight travel palette - a modified Frank Herring plastic palette.  They do different designs.

The new bridge over the gorge that splits the two sides of the town.  Over the middle span there's a small chamber above the arch that used to be a prison!  I'm into bridges at the moment!

Demo Painting to the Bristol Art Group - Porlock Weir

My first demo painting to the Bristol Art Group and a simple composition - easy background, cottages on the left, a boat, a figure and a light sign against a dark background.  And using a few different watercolor techniques - wash (of course), wet in wet, dry brush, and splattering.  Normally with the workshops I do, if it's a full day, we one painting in the morning and one in the afternoon.  So we all do our painting together and in stages - first I do my outline sketch, then the attendees do their outline sketch.  I then do my first or only wash, then everyone else does their wash, and so on.  It seems to work well as a format.
