Misty Morning River Tamar

Misty morning river tamar

River Tamar, UK, 15" x 11" Watercolor

Inspired by a bit of Claude Buckle, I attempted this misty scene on the River Tamar.  A limited palette and concentrating on values and the simple silhouette shape of the boats and their reflections.  Water reflections are best done with a mop brush with a good point/edge.

Yellow Taxi - Alexandria, Egypt

Yelloe taxi alexandria egypt

Alexandria, Egypt,Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A sort of scene revisited.  I had painted this same scene about 4 years ago. I offered it as a choice for a demo painting at a recent workshop, and it was selected for me to paint.  So a bit of deja vu.  This certainly was a looser rendition and the taxi was less bright in this one.

Alexandria 16 - A dusty street near the port

Alexandria 16

Alexandria, Egypt, 15" x 11"

A dusty street near the port of Alexandria.  Here I am trying to convey a feeling of a hot day,  a busy road, a bit of dust (which is probably unavoidable in this part of the world) and smoke.  There's a lovely mosque here with it's minarets towering above the street and the side of the dome catching the light.  A liberal amount of splattering has been used here and some lifting out of colour on the road surface.

Truck on a dusty road - Alexandria

Truck on dusty roads alexandria

Alexandria, Egypt, 15" x 11".

Done with my limited 3 colour palette - Cincerous Blue, Rose Red and Sennelier Yellow (plus a neutral tint for the darks).  I picked up an old photo of mine and tried to make a feature of this beat up truck.  With a bit of lifting out of paint and some splattering, I am trying to get a feeling of the dirt of the city centre in the height of summer, and a bit of movement.

Alexandria Street Market, Egypt, 15

Alexandria_street_egypt_15

Landscape Watercolour of Alexandria, 22" x 15".

A larger size painting of an Alexandrian Market, than my previous paintings.  Lots of earthy warm colours went into this one.  Steps 1) Sky.  2) Wash on buildings down to street, leaving out parasols, some figures and stall covers on the left.  3)  Details on buildings in really loose.  4)  Parasols and shop blinds and figures.  5)  Dark shadows running across the middle and main shadows on the right hand building.  6)  Details of power cables and parasol poles.

Road towards the Citadel, Alexandria

Alexandria_towards_citidel

Landscape Watercolour of Alexandria, 15" x 11"

An anonymous building in Alexandria shortly before the citadel, and a liberal use of yellow ochre and deep shadows.  Stages for this painting were 1) sky wash, leading to 2) mid and foreground wash with a little cobalt blue towards the bottom.  3) After drying I start with the side gate and the shadows of the buildings.  4) Last are the figures painted in while the shadows were still wet.
