3 Colour Palette

Flat brush and 3-colour palette painting

Flat brush and 3 colours

River Tamar, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

...Well 4 colours if I can include neutral tint as another colour.  So a flat brush used for most of this painting and pre-wet the paper to get the soft glow of the morning light in the sky and water.  Colours were ultramarine blue, lemon yellow and a winsor red.....plus neutral tint.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

4 Boats, Low Tide, St Isaac, Cornwall

4 boats st isaac t

St Isaac, Cornwall, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

An imaginary scene in some part, loosely based on the harbour of St Isaac in Cornwall, UK.  I was aiming for the pattern of the harbour bed and lines, drawing you into the focal point of the 4 boats.  Background kept really simple, with some soft interpretation of cottages on the harbour side.  Painted with my 3-colour palette.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Live, and Online, 2 hour Watercolor Workshop with Tim Wilmot, Sunday March 1st 2020 (ENDED)

I am running another live, online watercolour demonstration on Sunday, March 1st at 6 pm UK time (GMT).  Wherever you are, join me for this unique paint along, where we will paint the pretty town of St Emilion in France.  It's a popular tourist destination and a World Heritage Site.  This will not be a recording.  It is LIVE!

This online workshop is suitable for painters of any level.  It will be a demonstration in Watercolor.  I will go at a slow pace and describe with commentary what I am doing and the techniques I am using.  The commentary will only be in English, and I will try and speak slowly because I have many attendees where English is not their first language.

I might be painting this one using just three colors !!

All you will need is a good/reliable internet connection, and a headphone or PC speakers to hear my audio commentary (Worldwide Conference call phone numbers will also be provided if you want to connect by phone).  If you want to, you'll be able to ask plenty of questions as I go along.  There is a $7 USD fee to attend this live session.  It will not be uploaded to YouTube (as a Public Video) or available to anyone apart from the attendees who have paid to watch.  I should be able to send you a link to the recording of the demo afterwards, which only you can see.

The demo might be an hour to an hour and a half in duration (depends on how many questions/comments I get!).  We will paint at a slow speed and in stages.  So you can paint along with me if you want, or wait until you receive a link to the recording.

Registration will close a week before the event.

We will be painting this scene - the pretty town of St Emilion in France.  Old buildings, shadows and cars.  Oh, and we will also include some figures!:

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre - Blue Boats in a Row

Riomaggiore blue boats

Riomaggiore, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

I could have painted in this place all day.  Just down by these boats, and with the changing sunlight directions, many painting subjects become possible.  And the view down to the sea has a great help for composition with the opposite sides of the buildings.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

France Painting Holiday - Plein Air #1

France painting holiday plein air #1

Saint Seurin, France, 15" x 11"

The market at Saint Seurin on a Sunday morning and the first picture as 'tutor/leader' on a Painting Holiday I organised.  So a contra jour to start with.  The location I chose was about the only spot where I could paint.  It was so busy!  With plein air painting, when it's a hot day, there is an argument to say, find somewhere comfortable first and then paint what you see.

Plein air#2 - painting with the Exiles down on Bristol Harbourside

Exiles plein air may 2019 bristol waterfront 2

Bristol Harbourside, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Second painting on a recent plein air trip with my painting group, the Exiles.  The sun came out late morning, but the wind was still too strong out in exposed places. So I tucked in behind the Mud Dock Cafe building and just painted what was in front of me - the quayside, tops of boats and some apartments on the other side of the harbour as a backdrop.

Street Corner - Livorno

Street corner livorno

Livorno, Italy, 15" x 11"

When I don't know exactly where I painted this, I call the painting 'street corner...'.  I try to avoid have a large object, as part of a car on the immediate edge of a painting, so the bottom left, it's still in there but made into an abstract shape, to make it 'anything'.  Another of my 3-colour palette paintings.

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre 2

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre 2

Riomaggiore, Italy, 15" x 11"

Another painting of this village on the Cinque Terre, and those iconic striped tarps covering the boats.  So I went for the value change here between the light of the parasols and the dark shadows left.  There's a little platform under the parasols with some outdoor seating for the cafe.  So just an impression of some people sitting in the shade.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms paper.

Watermill Tuscany 2018 watercolour course painting #8 - Visit to a local monastery

Watermill tuscany 2018 #9

Day 5 as painting tutor on last years course at the Watermill in Tuscany and a visit to nearby 'Il Convento dei Carmine', a privately owned monastery with ancient cloisters and frescoes, gardens and views.  Lots of different views around the monastery and the internal cloisters (very tricky with lots of columns, shadows and perspective.  I decided to do an external shot with my demo and invented a gardener pushing a wheelbarrow.
