Up the hill to...St Emilion (France)

A simple composition of one of the roads leading into the small town of St Emilion in SW France.  And two ways of painting trees in watercolour:  A small fully loaded brush and some dry brush strokes.

Rue du Colonel de Chadois Bergerac - Shady Shopping Street

I think every good watercolour painting needs at least one 'clean' line.  Something dominant to lead the eye to or towards a key object.  So here I tried this with the angled support to the shop blind.

Charco de San Gines - Arrecife

Arrecife, Lanzarote, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The Charco de San Gines, The 'puddle' is an internal tidal harbour in the main town/city of Arrecife.  Quite tricky to get in the background - many detailed buildings and all mainly white or off white.  When all the buildings are white it can be sometimes a challenge to get right.  I kept it loose.  I have created a video of a similar scene here which I may publish soon up on YouTube.

Iron Acton - Bright windscreens

Iron Acton, UK, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The pretty village of Iron Acton, close to where I live.  Quite a simple scene and I made a focus of the windscreen.  Nice and bright against a dark background and a slight curve of reflection of the building to make it a little more interesting.

Place Jean Jaures, Sainte-Foy-la-Grande France

St Foy la Grande, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Place Jean Jaures, painted here just after the Saturday market has ended.  So fewer people and an easier scene to paint.  Here and not so often for me, I paint with the sun behind me, so casting some tricky shadows across the scene and a little more difficult to get figures looking right.

Bergerac No Entry

Bergerac, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

One of the old streets in Bergerac, SW France.  A favourite spot for me to paint.  So many painting opportunities, especially on a sunny day where you can get some interesting shadows being cast over the scene.  I went quite dark and cool on this one for the shadows to give maximum contrast with the warmth above.

Fuengirola Fishing Port

Fuengirola, Spain, Watercolour 15" x 11"

Here's an example of me creating hard and soft edges - so the background buildings and sky, the soft edge between the two, and then a hard edge on the middle ground shadows.  I am often asked about the showing of pencil marks in the finished painting.  I personally don't mind and where the paper is unpainted, I may not erase them.  The boat, for example, looks better with those marks - it might have been too bright without them over on the edge there.

Verrucola - Bridge and Castle view - Plein Air from my Tuscany Trip

Hello everyone.

 

This was our day 2 location - the castle top village of Verrucola, high up in the hills. We were a bit unlucky with the weather. It rained in the morning, so we were confined to the studio where we painted a scene from Pisa. But after a hearty traditional Italian stew, we painted this pretty scene looking at the main bridge across the river valley and the view of the castle with its bell tower. And the sun made an appearance!

Archway St Foy La Grande, France

I tend to always paint around a figure and a car when doing a wash, even though in this case, some of the cars are in the shadows.  Then when painting the cars, I try to get the right value for the body, and they while still damp, carefully blend with a brush into the surround and introduce some darker shadows below the car.

Eschif Perigueux

Perigueux, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

An unusual building overlooking the River L'Isle in Perigueux, France.  An old mill, or medieval watch tower, with lovely timber clad outer walls, and very well preserved.  The scene is a sort of slipway running up from the river to the main road and the centre of the city.  I thought a figure half in the shadows worked quite well in the composition.
