A bit of artist's licence with this one in that I don't think there is a 'cafe' right next to the lifeboat station, but I thought it helped the composition with some darker objects in the shade of the building.  Then I went pretty abstract with the bottom left corner.  Could be anything down there!

I feel a washing day theme coming on.  hot on the heels of my Vernazza washing day, here's one from Livorno a bit further down the coast.  Maybe a misplaced red car - I normally recommend not having parts of vehicles going off the side, but it sort of works here I think and the parking road marks help take the eye onwards to the building.  I started with two figures on the left, but 2 more 'appeared' on the right after random lighter areas were left from the initial washes.

Vernazza, Italy, 15" x 11"

Hope to see you Vernazza in October (I'm a tutor on a weeks painting workshop in the area)!  Washing hanging out to dry across tall buildings really gives an opportunity to sneak in some lovely shadows and contrasts (white bed sheets are best!).  A lovely location to paint.  Visitor numbers might be a bit lower this year assuming no big cruise ships visiting the area.

Livorno, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A street corner near the port area in Livorno, Italy.  I think this is almost an 'H' format composition - left hand buildings forming a border that side, shadows across the middle, then street signs up the right.  Works for me.

A corner in the canal in the New Venice area of Livorno - a network of inland canals a bit like Venice but much wider.  It really helps having a soft mop brush for the delicate strokes to take advantage of the rough paper surface and letting the paper sparkle through.

Actually an entry for my art club's annual exhibition, which of course because pf COVID has had to be cancelled.  Anyway, a slightly imaginary scene and a small fishing craft leaving harbour or perhaps returning... I don't know.  Had a little bit of fun playing around with wet in wet technique, then letting everything dry before going in with harder edges.

St Isaac, Cornwall, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

An imaginary scene in some part, loosely based on the harbour of St Isaac in Cornwall, UK.  I was aiming for the pattern of the harbour bed and lines, drawing you into the focal point of the 4 boats.  Background kept really simple, with some soft interpretation of cottages on the harbour side.  Painted with my 3-colour palette.

St Tropez, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A demo painting from last year (2019) to a local art group.  It's a scene I really like painting (I think this is my fourth one!).  I don't normally like paining the same scene - unless you see my recent video up on YouTube where I do give some other reasons for painting the same scene.  It's really quite a simple composition.

An imaginary scene - during lockdown and running our of source photos I need to be a bit more resourceful and re-purpose some older paintings.  Change boat configuration, change the slope of the beach, change direction of sun and so on.

Polperro, Cornwall, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Apart from the building and the shape of the background headland, a made up scene loosely based on Polperro in Cornwall UK.  I try to keep it loose and let the watercolor do its own thing.  While still damp, I do a bit of wet in wet with some darker values and get soft edges.
