Yellow Taxis, Athens
Apr 09, 2020
Athens, Greece, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
I went for a bright yellow on this one - I think cadmium yellow. So underlying wash was that yellow in most of the road area, then applied thicker for the taxis. After that first wash was completely dry, I paint the darks and shadows. Left completely loose on the left had side, and add in a few figures for interest.

Demo #2 to Frome Art Club - Chania Harbour
Feb 14, 2020
Chania, Greece, 15" x 11"
The second demo painting to Frome Art Club and a demo of reflections and boats and values. I normally do 2 demo paintings over a two-hour slot with a painting club (use my hairdryer to speed things up). This is Chania Harbour in Crete. Painted almost vertically because with a large audience behind you, you need people to see what you're doing.

Stripy Blinds and Boats, Chania Harbour
Jan 02, 2020
Chania, Crete, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
A little bit of a made-up composition based on the Old Harbour in Chania, Crete. It's a location I have painted a few times, and it's a composition I am happy with - background apartments, row of boats and reflections. This time I made a feature of the blinds.

Heritage Buildings - Chania Harbour, Crete
Sep 20, 2019
Chania, Crete,Watercolour, 15" x 11"
So a limited palette painting on Chania Harbour and I generally in a scene like this, try to have a dark background to some lighter boats in the foreground and so the row of heritage buildings on the quayside were a perfect backdrop for me. A frame on the left with a fairly loose rendition of the side of an apartment block or it might have been a hotel right on the waterfront.

Two guys, Chania Harbour
Aug 05, 2019
Chania, Crete, 15" x 11"
Not sure if the composition worked 100% on this one. I put the two figures in on the right, but every time I look at it, I just think there needs to be a small boat may be over on the left to balance. Or at least just left of centre.

Dull day in the Harbour - Chania
Jul 16, 2019
Chania, Crete, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
A dull day harbour scene, Chania in Crete. I think the composition works with the balance of the background buildings, the curve of the quayside and the position of the boats. Maybe I could have had the horizon higher to make more of a feature of the reflections....

Harbour walk, New Harbour, Chania, Crete
Nov 26, 2018
Chania, Crete, 15" x 11"
There were 2 main challenges with this scene - 1) getting the soft edges around the trees and soft shadows, and 2) the handling of the row of boats on the left, moored up against the harbour - all sorts of craft. So 1) was all about timing and sequence - tree first, then background buildings, then the dark areas of the tree. 2) was handled almost as an abstract, just observing the shapes, and not thinking 'boats'.

Akti Kanari Chania Crete - Harbour Scene and reflections
Sep 03, 2018
Chania, Crete, 15" x 11"
I haven't done boats for a while in a harbour scene, full tide and the reflections being a key element, and I miss doing them. Sadly in need of some more reference photos, I went back to some old ones from a previous holiday to Crete. Here is the sort of view I love doing - a row of boats, something tall in the background to give some larger reflections and a gentle swell to create some waves and interest.

Red roof, Chania fishing port, Crete
Jan 28, 2018
Chania, Crete, 15" x 11"
Tricky part with this painting was getting the trees right - their edges against the background and the softness of their colour. I let watercolour do what it does best - with combining wet washes a nice combination of colours appear and interesting bleeding patterns - just were I want them in the tree canopy.
