One of my entries to the 110th Annual Exhibition of Paintings by the Bristol Savages, runs from 2nd May to 16th May 2020. Location is Red Lodge, on Park Row, Bristol, UK. All will be well signposted.

My two-hour demos normally include me painting 2 watercolours. As a rule, I like to paint a scene very local to the venue. So a shortlist of photos are presented to the attendees, and a vote is taken on which 2 to paint. So my visit to Cowbridge Art Society had these 4 photos as the choice:
The most popular 2 were the Physic Garden top right and Ogmore Castle bottom left. So each of the following paintings were done in under an hour, with a bit of commentary from me along the way:

Weekly sketch night at my art society, the 'Bristol Savages', and the topic for the night was 'Challenges Ahead' (I think) - probably inspired by the virus issues at the moment. So we have 2 hours to produce a painting based on that topic without the use of any reference material (so no cheating looking up on the web). I came up with an idea, someone with reduced mobility, climbing some steps. Inspired by a Tuscan scene I have painted a couple of times. Paint a scene enough times, you sort of remember it.

Livorno, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
Following on from my fascination with washing lines, this is one from Livorno. I think the trick with washing lines is make them look as if they are attached to the building, and make sure they go from one window to another and not end up between windows if you see what I mean. Some dark shadows under the washing helps with the old values!

Fivizzano, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
Another painting of Fivizzano. It's after midday, the weekly market has ended, and the streets are a little quieter. Great location for loads of plein air painting and fabulous views down every street. I went quite loose with this one and made a play of the warm tones of the buildings on the other side of the street.

One of the many many canals around the older part of Livorno, Italy. Maybe I should have gone portrait orientation on this one? Anyway, anything with boats in is my cup of tea. The boats bottom right were simply done as you can see!
