The Green Mosque, Bursa, Turkey

The Green Mosque (or Yesil Cami in Turkish) is a very historic site in Bursa and popular tourist spot.  As well as the Turkish & Islamic Arts Museum here, there are many souvenir shops selling what I thought was good quality stuff and staff dressed in traditional ottoman uniforms.  The Green Mosque, commissioned by Sultan Mehmet I Çelebi and finished in 1424, is set on a promontory overlooking the valley with great views over Bursa city.  It takes its name from the green-blue tiles of the interior - but it has a pretty bright exterior also.

 

Pula, Sardinia

Pula is a little town just south of Cagliari on the Island of Sardinia.  I can remember taking the reference shot for this from a moving bus just as the driver was taken the bend at high speed and nearly fell over.  The shot was blurred so I had to use a bit of imagination on the composition.  It was high summer at the time and what looked like christmas decorations above the main street.  Maybe it was a local festival or it saves having to take them down each year, I wasn't sure.

 

Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol

Westbury-on-Trym is a well to do suburb of the city of Bristol in the South West of England. Often referred to as Westbury village, it still has that feeling of a village even though it's been surrounded by many other districts all making up North Bristol.  In this picture I tried to capture the light behind the memorial in the centre of the village. Before 1920 where the memorial is now, was a quaint old water fountain.

Alexandria Street 10, Egypt

At first arrival in Alexandria the most common colour you see in buildings are drab browns and greys, but on closer observation you see warmer colours, reds, greens and warm ochres. I wanted to get in this quick sketch a feeling of those hues and the chaos in some of the back streets with cars parked anywhere, overhead cables all over the place, unfinished tower blocks with their upper storeys empty and without windows. But it's a beautiful place and great for painting subjects especially watercolour.

Clock Tower Chipping Sodbury

Painted at my local Art Club, one evening and based on a reference photo, this is the iconic landmark building in the old market town of Chipping Sodbury and bares many similarities with clock towers in other nearby towns in the Cotswolds.  It's now the Tourist Office (and staffed by very helpful people), bus shelter, loo and meeting pint for many local events.  A very useful multi-purpose building indeed.

 

Mudanya, Turkey, 4

Another painting of my most favourite town on the Marmara coast, Mudanya.  Mudanya is characterised by many wonderful old wooden buildings with their upper floors larger than the ground floor, overhanging them by a few feet.  And now and again striking white buildings with ornate decorations on their facades offer striking contrasts.

 

Placa Catalunya, Girona

Placa Catalunya - a great central point in Girona and stradles the River Onyar that runs through the medieval city. The River was all dried up when I was there, but I guess the water levels rise in the Winter. Anyway, all the sightseeing areas are within easy walking distance of this point.

 

 

Street corner cafe, Girona, Spain

A very busy street corner on the main road Carrer de Barcelona in Girona just down from the Railway Station.  Girona's a fascinating place and on my visit I was able to take many reference photos for future paintings.  I am sure if I stayed there, I would have enough painting material for many months to keep me busy.

 

Arrecife, Lanzarote, 4 - a walk around the Charco de San Ginés

Arrecife is the main town on Lanzarote Island and has a lovely enclosed lagoon called 'Charco de San Ginés' just off the town centre.  It offers a nice level walk around the perimeter where you can gaze at the small fishing craft and boats coming and going through the narrow inlet.  In this painting I tried to get a bit of movement with the palm trees - Lanzarote is a windy place at the best of times and a popular spot for windsurfers.
