A subject I have done a few times before and as a painting before I used some hand-made paints, so I could compare the two. Watermouth Bay/Harbour is a great spot for painting, especially at low tide when you get the more interesting harbour bed exposed and some nice puddles with reflections.

"Enjoy the colours" was the subject for the weekly painting challenge at my Bristol based art club. We of course are all safe in our homes at the moment and just communicate once a week on these challenges. You see, I get my challenges as well! I went a bit loose on this one.

Painting from yesterday's watercolour demo to Cookham Art Club. I love painting a local scene for art club demos, so this was the centre of their village, and based on a photo from oe of the club members. Painted in an hour and a half with some questions and answers along the way..... It was an exercise in perspective, composition and the importance of values in watercolour. Livorno, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
Not being very imaginative with titles, I just had to call this one 'red car Livorno'. This is south of the centre of Livorno, almost where the lido starts. A sharp corner in the road and a contre jour looking West and some strong afternoon sunlight.

Ibiza, Spain, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
Well I guess most watercolour painters would ideally paint a bright sunny day on a location like Ibiza. However, I went with an overcast, yet bright day. The main challenge of which are lack of shadows and a small narrow range of values which sometimes does not work in watercolor.

How to make a bright scene and the light almost coming from almost behind you have some values in it? Answer, imagine the sun has moved a little and introduce shadows from a different direction. So here, a little more to the right and I can have some shadows coming across the street. I kept some soft edges for the rooftops to the sky.

An imaginary 'harbour' scene. I pre wet the paper after doing the initial sketch and then paint my initial wash, leaving out the bright areas. I had this idea of the sun coming through between the buildings. And a few gentle waves then in between the 3 boats.

Praça Ferreira de Almeida Faro Portugal
Went a bit loose on this one. A small square in central Faro, Portugal. Quite a simple composition - shadow, background building and one tree. Plus a few figures and cars to balance things out.

A second painting based on one of my late brothers, black and white photos. It was a holiday he had to one of the Greek islands. I don't know the exact location, but even in black and white, you could sense the bright light and the lovely hillside as the background coming down to the harbour. I was just guessing the colours, but hopefully was close to the mark.
