Livorno, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
I'm often asked how to paint shadow on top of reflections in water. Well here is an obvious example - the shadow under a bridge in this Livorno scene. I paint the reflections first - best as a solid colour and not many ripples. Then when still damp, go in with a darker, thicker colour for the shadows so you get a bit of a soft edge between the shadow and reflection.
Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.
