Landscape Watercolour of Bursa, Turkey, 15" x 11" on Bockingford Rough Paper 140 lbs
A busy street in Bursa, 4th largest city in Turkey. All the drivers are very well behaved. It could be any street in the world, but add in a minaret and a Doner Kebap sign and it instantly says a Turkish scene. This particular street i can remember had many 'Durums' - street cafes that specialise in doner wraps - of course Doner was 'invented' in Bursa.

Üsküdar, once known as Scutari, is a large district on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, opposite the European side of Istanbul. For visitors to Istanbul, Üsküdar is important for it's mosques - many are situated here with their lovely domes and they make great subjects of painting with the architecture and of course the challenge of painting a dome and trying to make it look symmetrical! Easier here when you can disguise half of it with a building in the foreground!

A popular holiday resort on the southern coast of Gran Canaria, Puerto Rico is man-made with two beaches and two marinas. It's got a great micro climate with almost 365 days sunshine a year, whilst almost 30 miles north at the top end of the island it can be pelting down with rain and 100% heavy cloud cover.

A quiet street in a busy part of Weston-Super-Mare, just before you get to the sea front (it's just over the middle building) and promenade. I was going for my 'H' composition on this one. Perhaps I could have chosen a more interesting subject, and have done my best by introducing a few figures in against the dark background - even though some of them look as if they've had too much to drink!

On the Marmara Sea, on the North West coast of Turkey and the quaint fishing village/town of Zeytinbagi. The town is well known for it's antique timber houses, most of which have not had their exteriors maintained too well, but this gives them a lovely shabby chic appearance which adds to their charm, as does their ochre hues. A great place to paint, especially when the suns out, and they sell Efes beer!

The bottom of the High Street and the War Memorial on a small roundabout used most of the time as an easy way of turning around and going back up the street, but this time of year (early November) a point of remembrance of all those who gave up their lives in two World Wars and other conflicts.
Painting with the light behind you is quite difficult I think in watercolour (probably easier with oil) - few shadows to define shapes, and little contrasts of tone. Anyway I gave it my best shot.

Another view of Chipping Sodbury High Street at the lower end of town, looking towards the 'Portcullis Hotel & Pub' (middle of painting) with the late afternoon sunshine coming across. The High Street remains unchanged with many old buildings 3 or 4 hundred years old and whilst not made of Cotswold stone, they have that same cosy look and feel.

The top of the High Street in my nearby town of Chipping Sodbury, and 'Gillys' Wine and Tapas bar on the right. Yes, a sleepy market town in the Costwolds can have a Tapas bar if it wants! Well the old building was previously a not so busy office stationary supplier and had been for sale for many years, so it's being put to much better use now!
