Bristol Savages Sketch Night - "Communications"

Bristol Savages Wednesday night topic selected by our Chairman was "Communications".  A great topic to work with and could be interpreted in so many different ways.  Well I decided to have a scene of some old buildings with some ugly satellite dishes on them (the communications theme do you get it?), the bell tower and on the right a traditional aerial.

Strada Nova, Venice, Italy

Venice, Italy, 15" x 22".

A very busy square at the end of Strada Nova.  A plein air demo I did while I was a tutor on a weeks workshop there.  Luckily at this spot I had my back to a wall and out of harms way.  Quite a liberal use of a yellow was here in the foreground to hopefully give a feeling of the afternoon sun.  Things were certainly drying very quickly.

Piazza Medicea Fivizzano, Tuscany

Fivizzano, Tuscany, 22" x 15".

A plein air from the recent painting holiday I ran with Watermill at Posara.  This is the local town and the main square.  Painted after some plentiful delicious home-made ravioli at lunchtime the restaurant in the same square.  After lunch the square was deserted (so I had to invent some figures) except for a few cars cutting across from one side to the other - making it a bit hazardous setting up your easel near the middle.  Doing plein air in an urban setting - think safety!

Second Plein Air from Fondamenta dei Penini, Venice

A second plein air from the first days painting on the recent Venice Painting Holiday I ran.  This is the footbridge over to the Fondamenta dei Penini, just a short walk from the Arsenale Ferry Station.  Looking around this area, there were a dozen possible scenes within 50 metres or so - lots of choices.  But for the second one I decided on personal comfort and positioned myself in the shade and out of people's way.

A plein air from the first days painting on the recent Venice Painting Holiday I ran.  This is Fondamenta dei Penini, just a short walk from the Arsenale Ferry Station.  I fairly quiet spot to paint considering you're in one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world.  For me, it was the washing hanging out to dry that attracted me to this scene.  I had to work quite quickly whilst keeping a commentary going as the foreground shadows were moving fast!

 

Venice Fish Market Plein Air Demo

A plein air demo from the recent Venice Workshop I ran.  Quite an overcast day and I decided to add a few shadows for some extra interest.  Memo to self: don't go there midday as there's a chance all the market traders are clearing up after the morning market and it's a very busy corner where I was - I had to move my easel several times as I was obstructing them getting to their boats.  Another hazard - the traders were trowing away unsold fish and sprats still in their polystyrene trays and the local seagulls had a frenzy - it was like a scene out of Hitchcock's The Birds movie.

 

Il Convento dei Carmine, Tuscany

Monastry, Tuscany, 22" x 15"

Il Convento dei Carmine', a privately owned monastery with ancient cloisters and frescoes was the 5th day venue on the recent workshop I ran with the Watermill at Posara,  A peaceful location and some very tricky subjects with all these columns and arches, made even more challenging with the light.  For this scene I picked the exterior entrance where I had to only deal with 4 arches!

Mountains beyond Monte dei Bianchi, Tuscany

Tuscany, Italy, 22" x 15"

A quickie done in about 30 minutes as a demo on the last day of the workshop I held in Tuscany this year.  The village of Monte dei Bianchi is up there somewhere.  Lovely majestic peaks of the mountains in the distance and the sweeping shadows of the nearby trees I thought made for an ideal watercolour demo without too much detail and the need to put in figures etc.  Also done with a 3 colour palette consisting of a blue, yellow and red of course and a neutral tint.
