Two demos - same subject

Through the year I do a few demos to local art groups/societies in the South West of the UK.  Based on the general subject to piant, e.g. Seascape, I hand out 8 suitable photos to base my painting on.  Earlier in the year I did a demo to two separate groups, and they just happened to chose the same photo - Cadeques and some boats moored up on a small beach there.  So here they are and feels like a 'spot the difference' competition.  Both done in about an hour and a half and same size - 22" by 15".

Casa Antonio, Torremolinos

Torremolinos, Spain, 15" x 11"

A beach bar on the long promenade in Torremolinos.  Typical of many of the restaurants here - White, rectangular and looking out to see.  Sand has many colours if you stare at them long enough so a chance to play around with different watercolour techniques like wet in wet and some dry brush strokes.  A couple of figures in the shadows adds a bit of contrast.

 

Boats moored up on the beach - Tossa de Mar

Based on a holiday photo of mine, I thought the repetitive pattern of the castle ramparts made for an interesting backdrop to some boats up on the beach.  The pine trees up on the top of the hill are just simple silhouettes, painted loosely with an old mop brush.  The two figures on the left were not originally planned, but during the later stages of the painting, some gaps in the background allowed to 'make' some figures.

Trying out Canson Moulin du Roy paper - A Mijas scene

Someone kindly gave me a few sheets of Canson's Moulin du Roy watercolour paper recently and a chance for me to try something different from my normal Saunders Waterford.  I decided to paint a scene similar to what I have done before, for a proper comparison.  The paper has a different surface and takes on washes in a different way, probably a little more absorbent than Saunders.  Overall, very nice paper, a good substitute for Saunders, but as I think I have said before in previous posts, in my opinion it takes about 20 paintings to get used to different paper.

 

Practice sketch for a La Plage de la Ponche, St Tropez

A practice sketch for a scene I have done a couple of times before and a demo preparation.  The tones of the buildings are possible slightly more vibrant and warmer than reality, but I think it needs it and helps that Mediterranean feel.  Handy to have the dark background and then slap some light figures in front of it to captitalise on the contrasts.  Plenty of neutral tint used in the shadows to get those deep darks.

 

 

15 Minute Sketch on the back of another painting - Beach at La Cala, Spain

What do you do when you've done a painting, you have 15 minutes to spare, your palette is still loaded and ready to go in front of you...?  Answer, you turn your paper over and do another quickie!  So this was a made up composition of the beach at La Cala (sorry to the locals if I have changed the palm trees/buildings around) and just experimenting.  Key focal point of course are the two figures with a bit of negative painting.  All done with one brush - a large mop brush with a good point.

 

Boats and Surf, Playa de las Canteras, Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria, Spain, 15" x 11".

The Playa de las Canteras in the north of the island and a composition of boats and people on the beach.  Sand can be a tricky thing to paint.  It's almost like painting moving water - you have these highlighted peaks and then bits of shadow behind them.  Timing is very important.  The beach was is laid down then paint in the shadows and lift out the highlights.  I have tried also to create a good bit of bright light from the surf and put some darker figures in front for contrast.

My next live, online watercolour demo will be on Thursday May 7th at 7pm GMT (UK Time).  It might be a beach theme this time!  Sorry, no cars.

The demo might be an hour to an hour and a half in duration (depends how many questions/comments I get!).

My subject will likely be this beach scene.  On the suggestion of a regular attendee to my sessions, if you would like to paint this scene below yourself before the 7th and email me a photo of your picture, I will share with other attendees and we can all discuss your efforts - like giving you a critique if you wish.
