Chania, Crete, 15" x 11"
There were 2 main challenges with this scene - 1) getting the soft edges around the trees and soft shadows, and 2) the handling of the row of boats on the left, moored up against the harbour - all sorts of craft. So 1) was all about timing and sequence - tree first, then background buildings, then the dark areas of the tree. 2) was handled almost as an abstract, just observing the shapes, and not thinking 'boats'.
Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.
