A local pub near to the center of Yate town. It's quite an old building with modern houses surrounding it. Here I am trying to capture the feeling of a late summer day and the light coming towards me. The car park has this fortunate low wall surrounding the car park, which comes in really handy on the composition.

Just near where I live and like a little slice of deepest Devon, up here in the heart of South Gloucestershire. In fact this little spot could spawn many compositions from different angles, and there's the River Frome (hence the name of this road I guess) crossing the area. Chimney smoke was done almost at the end - the area of smoke was dampened slightly then Chinese White dropped in (heavier at the base).

Another sketch of the church local to me but on half imperial size paper this time. On this attempt I moved the dead end sign to the left side of the road and had the tree as a background. It just did'nt look right on the right-hand side, mixed in with the cottage. Background trees were done with an old brush and quite thick paint.

Lovely little village of Tytherington, South Glos, and a view across to the church and some neighboring cottages from the shade of large tree next to the Swan Pub. Quite a simple composition I suppose with very little painting of architectural detail on the church and simple foreground shadow connected with person walking forwards.

A location close to me and a nice green space in the town, popular with dog walkers. I thought the composition looked okay with the sweeping road, the cottage on the corner, and some bright light hitting the roofs and road. Somehow my eye keeps going to the litter bin. A little bit of red was dragged across the grass to dull it down a bit.

A church very local to me with the village hall next to it. The shadow across the foreground was 'invented'. I could have left just the lawns and road alone, but I think it needed a bit of extra interest. I'm going to attempt this scene again on double size paper and change a few things around, like I think the dead end sign needs to be on the other side of the road and contrasting more with a dark background.

Landscape Watercolour of Bath, 15" x 22".
The largest portrait orientation painting I have done to date, and the subject was the sunlit building at the end of the Pulteney Bridge in Bath. I tried to break up the colour of the stonework, while wet, with bits of different pigment. The base wash was mainly Yellow Ochre. The focal point was I suppose the light parasol on the platform above the river. Then I went quite dark on the shadows and reflections. Darks were a high proportion of Paynes Grey with a touch of Ultramarine or Alizarin Crimson.

Back to my normal qtr size paper and a scene in Weston Super Mare, looking down a pedestrian precinct towards the pier. I took the liberty of introducing the shop blinds on the other side of the street and a little bit of shadow cast across them.

Painted from a referrence photo of mine of the harbour festival in the city when there's many different types of boats moored up on the internal waterways. The most difficult area was of course the reflections and trying to judge the right time to drop in darker, thicker pigment on the water to give the feeling of smaller softer waves.

As Chipping Sodbury has quite a wide high street, I think from a composition point of view, you have to have the subject being the fronts of shops and houses almost head on. Having the cars parked in front adds another layer of interest. Having the road in foreground, I moved the street furniture around a bit to make something of the foreground.
