Chipping Street in central Tetbury, looking towards Christ Church on the right. The day was actually quite cloudy, so I had to assume some shadows and the largish foreground shadow. There's a little bit of negative painting around the windows on the left hand building showing some light, and around the car. Not too careful to still leave a loose feeling hopefully.

Last year I was kindly invited to the South Stoke Art Group in Bath. This was my first demonstration painting and the theme was 'figures in landscape'. Of course figures help a landscape painting with greater interest, help the composition and giving it scale.
The scene is quite a simple one - a single cottage, dark trees in the background, a bit of grass to the right, and almost centre my figure with dog.

An old pub in Chipping Sodbury, the Beaufort Hunt. In the winter it always has a nice log fire going. Anyway, steps for the painting 1) Sky and wash over rest of painting, coming warmer on the road. 2) After fairly dry, went in with the roof tops and paint around figures and car tops. 3) Cars and windscreens. 4) Deeper shadows of the buildings and timber details. 5) Last was figure details and deeper shadows of the cars.
This painting won first prize in my local art competition, the 'Yate Open' in 2013.

Bowling Hill on the entry to the market town of Chipping Sodbury - the main road is to the left and there's a little dead end on the right, lined with period buildings. Large trees on the left provide a bit of dark contrast to the light of the road surface. While the road wash was still a bit damp, it was splattered with clear water and a bit of extra pigment dropped in.

Another scene of Brook Street Chipping Sodbury. It's hidden from the main High Street and I am sure not many locals know of this scene reminiscent of a little country village somewhere in middle England. Trees were done with my new smallish mop brush purchased from a national web site for the princely sum of 15p.

A composition of the riverside path along the River Frome in Chipping Sodbury (it's over to the left of picture), and the pretty little cottages in Brook Street. The lines of the shadows (I remember using quite a big mop brush) help with defining the form of the different levels. Then a few vertical lines of the sign and telegraph poles connect the picture foreground & background (hopefully).

A short hill just before you hit the main part of Chipping Sodbury. I have tried to balance the cottages on the far side of the road with a couple of figures on the right. In the middle of the road is actually a 'mini-roundabout', but putting that in the composition might have ruined it, so I've just added a few swirls as a suggestion.

The High Street in Thornbury South Gloucestershire, looking down the road and a distinctive pointed roof top building (think it's a shop). The row of cars on the other side of the road and the buildings behind were just suggested in a loose style. The street lamp was painted in one process with a dry brush stroke.

A simple scene here, a location near to where I live. The Goose Green is nothing to do with the Falklands, but gets it's name from the Goose Fairs that were held a century or two ago. There's an avenue of purple maples running along the road, making the background. It's a popular place in the town for walking your dog, so a figure and dog makes for a bit of a focal point. I had a bit of fun with the leaves in a loose style and plenty of splattering.

The approach to the centre of my local town and a bit of the old vs the new - the mid 70's shopping centre in the background with it's flat roof tops and the old White Lion pub on the left which must be a few centuries old. While the building walls were still wet, I dropped in more colours to make them a bit more interesting.
