The Starcross-Exmouth ferry, docked at Exmouth Harbour and the entrance to the marina here. The estuary here is very busy in the summer months with all sorts of traffic going up and down. This is low tide with the pontoon down, and the view across to the sand dunes on the Starcross side.

The centre of Exmouth in South Devon and looking towards the light on a bright summer's day. I had a good practice here of dropping thicker pigment into wet washes (while still moist) to alter their tone and add a bit of interest, for example dropping some ultramarine blue into a warm red wash.

My impression of a sunny day in Exmouth, South Devon. This is the edge of the central square (most of which has been pedestrianised now) in Exmouth looking up towards the municipal park. I think the buildings in the middle were Tapas bars and restaurants. Not too much detail was put into the buildings save for the chmineys and roof windows.

A view of Lynmouth in North Devon, looking towards the Exmoor hills to the South. My painting was based on a black and white 1930's photo I found, so I had to change some details around buildings, people etc. Anyway the steps of this painting were, 1) sky and foreground wash, and then left to dry. 2) Far hills and then going darker for the middle ground hillside and doing some negative painting around the rooftops. 3) People and telegraph pole and 5) smoke rising from far building with some watered down gouache on dry paper.

A view looking at the North Devon seaside town of Lynmouth looking towards the high coastal cliffs which form the edge of Exmoor. The Rhenish tower on the quayside was destroyed by the terrible floods of 1952 which swept down through the town. The tower has the resemblance of something medieval and the design originates from buildings on the Rhine.

The harbour, looking towards Brixham town and one of the old restored double masted sailing boats which take part in the annual festivals here in Devon. I suppose the composition is fairly simple. An initial wash went over the top half of the picture, then the lower half, getting darker towards the bottom. While the sea wash was moist, thicker, darker pigment was dragged over to form the waves and foreground interest. When the top half was dry, I continued with the background town buildings, again kept simple and just indicating some roof tops and lighter patches. Last stage was the boats, boat reflections and then the masts.

Ilfracombe harbour is the largest harbour on the North Devon coast and has been an important port for several centuries. It's a busy place with still some small commercial trawlers coming in and ferries off to other Bristol Channel locations. This view is looking up the hill (that shelters the harbour from southerly winds) and the town centre to the West.

Cockwood Harbour is a small picturesque harbour which is positioned on the Exe Estuary opposite Exmouth, in Devon. This natural harbour with its hillside backdrop is tidal, and at low tide exposes mud flats; boats enter the harbour under two railway arches which are the legacy of Isambard Kingdom Brunel where steam trains can still be seen today. The picture perfect village of Cockwood has pretty thatched cottages, and houses which rise gently around the harbour which once saw fishermen and smugglers busy at work here, today though the Harbour is enjoyed by colourful boats, and the Swans and Geese who flock here. Great place for fresh mussels at the local pub!

At low tide, Brixham Harbour, the bright colours of fishing trawler hulls are revealed, brightening up a winter's afternoon. To me they look so top heavy that they might keel over at any moment. When the tides come in, they'll put to sea again as part of one of the UK's largest fishing fleets.

Wander along the harbour walls at Brixham any time of day and it's a hive of activity. Here the fishing boats are moored up and resting before the next fishing trip. Brixham is one of the largest working fishing ports in the UK and the fish market here, completed last year is a huge state of the art job costing £8m!
