The High Street in my local town, just on the corner of Wickwar Road. These old buildings here are infuriating to paint: Colour wise, I keep seeing all sorts of hues, purple, blues, browns, and then the architecture itself - no straight lines, gables not the same size and nothing symmetrical. Plus with the light coming down the street, you have to judge the right time to paint to get the shadows right for my liking.

Another painting of St Mary's Church in Yate, this time more of an Autumn/stormy scene and grey sky. I seemed to have a few leaning figures so perhaps they're struggling against the wind. Sky was mainly ultramarine blue and burnt umber. Church tower was weak light red. Trees and foreground shadows were done with an old brush and thickish pigment.

The Wickwar Road junction with the High Street in Chipping Sodbury. Steps for this painting 1) Sky wash starting with weak yellow ochre on the right and getting darker to the left. Wash continued down and warmer for the base wash of the road. Careful to paint around car tops, road sign and figure. 2) Background buildings, then buildings left and right. Added a second light wash to the road. 3) Cars done with a fairly light wash but lower areas and car shadows with really dark pigment. 4) Completed with figure, street lamp and road signs. A few dry brush strokes over the road to break things up a bit.

There's a little bridge here over the River Frome and a view up to the ridge which sits above Chipping Sodbury Quarry. On the right foreground, just an indication of the stone capped wall painted with quite thick paint on top of the base wash. Again a bit of a challenge with the light behind, to introduce some shadows.

Another version of Market Day in Chipping Sodbury in larger format. It's a bright winter's morning and the sun low in the sky, so longer shadows. The sky was roughly painted - I left a bare patch in the middle, then soft clouds around that, and drop in a bit of cerulean blue here and there. The road had a couple of washes, coming darker and warmer in the foreground.

Continuing my theme of painting every pub in the area where I live, this is the recently opened Horseshoe Pub at the top of the High Street. Perhaps not enough detail in this one and maybe I could have stepped back and had a wider view, or get one or two vehicles in there. I invented the yellow road sign - I think it needed something on that side of the picture and needed a parallel shade line with the pub behind.

A little incline, then a sharp right bend, and your into the main High Street in Chipping Sodbury. I decided to leave the large shadow area, right, without too much detail and have a couple of approaching figures plus dog just merge in. Some areas, while still damp, were lifted out with a bit of paper towel. The dark branches of the tree in the centre were done with a 'sword' brush and thicker pigment.

A local quarry to me where lorries are busy collecting crushed aggregates and then taking them on to various local building projects I guess. I thought this made a good subject to paint with the bold containers standing out against the dark background, the connecting conveyor belts and pipes, and a few employees wandering around in their hi viz jackets. I had to put a little bit of effort into the preliminary drawing to ensure the details were correct and the perspective.

The Saturday Farmer's Market in Chipping Sodbury on a sunny winter's day. I liked the scene with the light coming in between the two buildings and catching the tops of the stalls and the bonnets of cars. Had a bit of fun with the sky - the whole area was wetted evenly, then left to dry a bit. When damp, I dropped in the dark clouds in a random fashion with a small mop brush, then quickly dropped in some cobalt blue up to, but not quite touching the clouds.

A Winter scene of the path leading to Brook Street in Chipping Sodbury, with the town Church tower in the background (the tower was moved to a more central position than it really is, to help the composition). There's a row of cottages here who have a nice view over the park to the right. On the path I introduced some lighter areas depicting puddles and an easy way of getting some reflections in. Trees top left were done in a 'random' fashion with a mop brush and fairly thick paint.
