Old Inn at Westerleigh

Another pub fairly local to me, the Old Inn at Westerleigh or Ye Olde Inne, and the Parish Church behind.  Before the big town of Yate arrived on it's doorstep it was probably a quiet little village but now it's more a 'rat run' route from Yate to North Bristol.  I think the best thing I did on this one is adding the little angled shadow on the pub sign.  Sometimes it's the smallest little details that matter.  Somehow I forgot to add any people on this one.  Maybe they're all in the pub.

 

White Lion Inn Yate

A scene near to me and the White Lion Inn with a few locals enjoying a few beers in the rare UK summer sun.  The background trees were rendered with a sword or dagger brush, an odd shape of a brush but brilliant for random foliage effects and also long straight lines like phone cables etc.

 

Mykonos Seafront, Greece

The sweeping bay of Mykonos Town and the perimeter of wall-to-wall restaurants attracting the local tourists.  I have come to the conclusion that some good paintings have bands of light and dark tones down them, so starting with the sky being normally light, then a dark mountain or row of buildings, then a line of light roof tops/blinds, then shadow coming down, then sunlight hitting the ground and so on.  I'll experiment.

 

Restaurant in Favignana, Sicily

Favignana is a very small island off the west coast of Sicily and very peaceful it is too.  There's only a few cars/roads and a very laid back atmosphere.  My sketch is of a restaurant or trattoria near the port and I was struck by how red the exterior walls were.  Well I tried to get the effect here of he baking summer sun beating down on the place.

 

Redcliff Back, Bristol

A view in central Bristol, from Princes Street looking towards Redcliff Back (a long stretch of waterways) and the spire of Redcliff Cathedral in the background.  In the centre is 'Princes Pantry' where you can grab their popular egg and bacon bap whilst sitting on their park benches outside.

 

Cadeques Spain 7

A sheltered corner of Cadeques with the afternoon sun streaming in to light a corner cafe.  This painting was finished quite quickly for me and I think it looked better for not being overlooked.  The foreground shadow I added as a later stage to bring a bit of balance and I believe it improved the composition.

 

Guatiza, Lanzarote

The centre of the small town of Guatiza in the north east of the island of Lanzarote.  Centre of town here is just a cafe and a bus stop.  The town's claim to fame is that it's home to the Cactus Garden or Jardin de Cactus - a large sheltered hollow filled with hundreds of different cacti and succulents, plus modern sculpture.  Well worth a visit if your there.

That cafe was not meant to be a smiley face.

 

Piazza Yenne, Cagliari, 2

The Piazza Yenne is one of the most important squares of Cagliari located at the end of the Largo Carlo Felice in the centre of town. By day it's a popular spot for tourists visiting the citadel or the old town and by night it's a busy meeting place for locals.

 

Puerto del Carmen, Old Town 3

At the quieter end of Puerto del Carmen around the marina lies the older part of town characterised by white washed buildings with the odd one defying the norm like the large restaurant here (I think called 'El Ancla') with an imposing brown facade and bright green blinds.  Anyway it serves good steaks and pizzas.  There's many other restaurants and tapas bars in the area.  

 

Steps in the old town, Girona

Some grand steps in the old part of central Girona leading up to an ice cream parlour and a sunny little corner.  The old part of town has many narrow streets, many too narrow for vehicles, but there's no danger of getting lost as it's not too large an area.
