Promenade walk, Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, 15" x 11".

The promenade walk towards the port area.  I thought this made an interesting subject with all those curves - the wall, its shadow, the palm trees with curved fronds and their shadows.  I was tempted to use a large dry brush stroke for the nearest palm tree frond, but detail took over me and I decided to paint every leaf with a small thin brush.  Next time I'll go for a more loose approach.  I managed to get 'fat man' and his dog into the composition.

 

Two Motorboats, Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

A tricky painting from the view of getting the perspective right, looking down on the boats and the town/horizon in the background.  Those buildings in the background were given a fairly loose approach - not concentrating on all the architectural details and painting every window!  Boat defenders are another tricky challenge.  Leave them out and somehow the boat does not look realistic.  A little bit of white gouache applied with a rigger brush was used for ropes and railings as a last stage.

 

Four boats at low tide, Porthleven Harbour, Cornwall

Quite a simple composition of four small boats at low tide in the Cornish town of Porthleven.  Not sure why I went for four, it might have been better to go for 3 or 5.  Anyway they're all different and at slightly different angles to make them a bit more interesting.  Quite a few later details were added like ropes and ladders with first some white gouache with a rigger brush and then some shadows behind them with the same brush.

 

Three Fishing Boats, Newquay Harbour, Cornwall

Plenty of negative areas in this one (light against dark) which the area lends itself well to - the light sky, dark cliffs, light roof tops, building shadows, then the light beach, dark shore line, light of the boats and finally the darker see and reflections.  All a good combination for watercolour.  I always enjoy doing boat reflections - a fairly random approach using the side of a medium mop brush with a very good point and starting at the waterline, moving down in angular strokes and more pronounced at the end.

 

Tables waiting, San Antonio, Ibiza

Not a normal subject for me - close ups of restaurants or cafes.  And especially difficult with tables and chairs.  Perhaps square/rectangular tables are a bit more difficult to get right than circular ones!  I have added a waiter emerging from the shadows just to balance the composition on that side.  And a very loose approach to the background - a couple of figures, trees and an apartment block all given just very basic detailing.

A demo painting I did recently and a scene I have done once before.  The requested subject was for an urban scene with figures and cars.  The no entry sign is very poignant for me as last year I drove through this very area not knowing it was only for taxis and buses, and landed myself a £75 fine.  Serves me right for not paying attention!  Anyway, I love this area and there's loads of different painting possibilities all around you.  A bit difficult for plein air painting - far too busy with shoppers and tourists.
