The 'New Harbour' at Chania. Painting water and reflections with watercolour is mostly about timing - the first wash for the water starts light at the top and gets a bit deeper to the bottom by mixing more pigment. After about 4-5 minutes (of course this drying time depends on so many factors like type of paper, % water content, air humidity etc...) when the wash is damp you can add in some horizontal strokes for the waves with a darker, thicker mix using a medium sized mop brush ideally not a synthetic one. I sometimes use cobalt blue and burnt sienna for this darker mix as I find that does not 'bleed' so much. This will give that soft wave effect. It needs a bit of practice !
