Fishing boats at Cadgwith on the Lizard in Cornwall

Watercolour of the Lizard in Cornwall, 22" x 15" on Saunders Waterford Rough 300 gms.

Cadgwith is a tiny fishing village forgotten by the 21st Century, located on the eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall.  Here, the focus is on a typical white-washed cottage with a thatched roof, and some relatives of the old pilchard fishing boats, high up above the shore line.  Painting of the beach was done fairly loosely as you can see.  Unpainted spots became rocks, emphasised with a bit of a shadow behind them.

 

Newquay Harbour 9

A scene along a busy side of Newquay Harbour in Cornwall, and as the sign eludes to - an embarkation point for boat trips and also where many local fishing boats unload their catch of shellfish.  Sky wash went in first, down to water level, and continuing down the right side with the warm tones.  Then the background hill and far harbour wall shadows, painting around the far boat.  Then the sea - lighter in the distance and a deeper colour towards the foreground.  When the sea was was dry, I painted in waves and reflections with a small mop brush.  Last were boat details, shadows on right harbour wall and figures.  And sign lettering was with a bit of white gouache.

 

Alexandra Parade, Weston Super Mare

Almost the centre of this seaside town near where I live.  A sweeping curve of the road and a bit more interesting than a straight line curb.  The sky was was laid in first and then while damp, I painted the roof tops with a warm light red.  So a bit of intentional merging took place.  On Saunders paper it's all well behaved.  I've done this before on cartridge paper and you end up with a horrible mess.  When all was dry, I painted in the shadows of chimneys etc..

 

St Tropez and Rue Cavaillon

A 'backstreet' scene in St Tropex, France.  Up ahead the road forks into two narrow streets.   The buildings here have lovely warm tones - plenty of light red and burnt sienna to replicate them.  There's two sides to Saunders paper.  This one, I've painted on the 'wire' side where you have regular indentations made by the wire grill that help made the paper.  However, I'm starting to prefer the 'other side'....

Albufeira Old Town 4

A loose style watercolour, more a sketch completed in approx one hour.  Plenty of light warm tones up against denser cooler tones to give a feeling hopefully of a sunny narrow street here, lined with souvenir shops and bars.  Cerulean blue and cad red was dropped in various places for shop goods and reflections.

 

 

Marseille Old Port Area, 3

A view along the promenade running along the sides of the old port area.  On each jetty there's a small hut/building which I think were toilets/storage for the boat owners.  Anyway it made for a bit of a focal point, along with some made up figures strolling around.  In the background and left, cliffs rise up from the waterfront.  A myriad of masts help connect the lower part of the picture to the top.

 

Newquay Harbour 8

A little windy road leading down to Newquay Harbour in Cornwall and a scene at low tide (of course).  The beach had a pretty basic treatment from me - just one wash, plenty of yellow ochre in the centre and a bit of cobalt blue towards the foreground.  A small boat in the shadows adds a bit of interest there, and just a hint of it catching the light.

 

Horse Street Chipping Sodbury 2

Horse Street in the market town of Chipping Sodbury.  200 metres ahead, the road takes a sharp left, and the retail shops make way for residencies.  The main was set the scene with the sky done quickly - warm clouds first, then dropped in some cerulean blue.  Down to the foreground, it was a yellow ochre patch on the left and a light grey for the road (ultramarine blue and burnt sienna).

 

Ilfracombe Harbour 2

A view across Ilfracombe Harbour from it's small car park on one side.  What caught my attention for the composition was the slate roof of St Nicholas Chapel catching the morning light, and being the brightest thing in the picture.  Small parts of the background buildings were lifted out while the wash was still moist to give the appearance of smoke or a misty bit.

 

Central Inn Newquay 2

Central Inn, as the name suggests is a pub located in the centre of Newquay.  By night it's a very lively place and by day a nice place to have a coffee or sit outside if the weather's nice.  Round the area, there's plenty of fast food outlets and of course Cornish pasty shops.  Put in plenty of bright red in this one starting with the parasols outside the pub, then the no entry sign and another splash on the left for good measure.
