Hay Bales Dordogne
Oct 07, 2020
Dordogne, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
An imaginary scene taking inspiration from the Dordogne countryside and a late summer field. So straw bales, you can put them where you want to suit the composition. As long as you observe their format - the texture, a flat bottom because they weigh so heavy and the stubble of the field and where they cut the hay, the bales are lying at right angles to the rows, if you see what I mean.
Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Eveneing demo at Cowbridge Art Society
Mar 06, 2020
My two-hour demos normally include me painting 2 watercolours. As a rule, I like to paint a scene very local to the venue. So a shortlist of photos are presented to the attendees, and a vote is taken on which 2 to paint. So my visit to Cowbridge Art Society had these 4 photos as the choice:
The most popular 2 were the Physic Garden top right and Ogmore Castle bottom left. So each of the following paintings were done in under an hour, with a bit of commentary from me along the way:
Above - Ogmore Castle
Above - The Physic Garden (bit of a rush to complete this one!)
Both painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms

Bergerac, France, 15" x 11"
Just an ordinary country lane with a bit of negative painting - painting around objects to keep their lighter value - as in the tree trunks on the right and the round road sign. However when it comes to highlights on figures, sometimes you've just got to reach for a little white gouache. As you can see, I don't mind cauliflowers in watercolour. I sometimes encourage them and they really work I think in foliage.
