Bristol Savages Sketch Night - There will always be an England

Bristol savages there will always be an england by tim wilmot t

Weekly sketch night at my art society (well we are all at home locations for a bit), the 'Bristol Savages', and the topic for the night was 'There will always be an England'. So we have normally 2 hours to produce a painting based on that topic without the use of any reference material (so no cheating looking up on the web). Owning to the current social distancing restrictions, this of course was a virtual meeting.

My painting is based on a view looking down Gloucester Road and some dramatic shadows.

Minehead Harbour at low tide

Minehead harbour low tide

Minehead, Somerset, 15" x 11"

Simple composition - go for 3 boats, all different sizes.  It's amazing how many colours you can sometimes find in the harbour floor.  Probably more than if it were the sea.  My reference photo was a dull December day.  I changed it to a sunny one!

Uphill Marina #3 - Getting the values right

Uphill marina river axe #3

Uphill Marina, Weston-Super-Mare, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A third painting of this lovely location on the River Axe.  I must get down there when the tide is in.  I think I got the values better on this one with the distant hills and stronger values in the foreground.  Might have been nice to add in a few more posts to help the composition.

Bristol Sketch Night - Virtute et Industria - City of Bristol Motto

Bristol savages Virtute et Industria

Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Weekly sketch night at my art society, the 'Bristol Savages', and the topic for the night was Virtute et Industria (virtue or valour and industry) - the motto for the city of Bristol in the UK. So we have 2 hours to produce a painting based on that topic without the use of any reference material (so no cheating looking up on the web).  I created a scene of working fishing boats.

Iron Acton - Bright windscreens

Iron acton bright windscreen

Iron Acton, UK, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The pretty village of Iron Acton, close to where I live.  Quite a simple scene and I made a focus of the windscreen.  Nice and bright against a dark background and a slight curve of reflection of the building to make it a little more interesting.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Village Church Iron Acton

Village church iron acton

Iron Acton, UK, 15" x 11"

Composition - the more I look at this one, the more I question in my mind the purpose of the figure on the right.  I think the right hand side is too loaded with stuff - the church, the car and the large figure.  Maybe put the figure on the left, not so large, and have the shadows going across at an angle to connect, and not have the figure so obvious.  Perhaps the next one...
