The Marsh at Surlingham - Winter

Online Workshop February 18th - Let's paint a simple rural scene!

Feb 2025 public workshop

Announcing my next watercolor live event on February 18th at 8pm GMT.

From a watercolorist's perspective, this English countryside scene presents several interesting challenges and opportunities:

Key Compositional Elements: The scene has a lovely natural diagonal composition created by the hillside, with the stone cottages nestled into the middle ground. The electricity lines create leading lines that draw the eye across the composition. The framing trees on either side create a natural vignette effect.

Technical Challenges:

  • Capturing the subtle gradation of the harvested field's golden-brown tones would require careful wet-in-wet technique
  • The varied greens of the trees and foliage would need layering to create depth and texture
  • The stone cottages require precise control to maintain their light values while suggesting their texture
  • The moody, overcast sky needs delicate handling to maintain its luminosity
