Weekly sketch night at my art society (well we are all at home locations for a bit), the 'Bristol Savages', and the topic for the night was 'There will always be an England'. So we have normally 2 hours to produce a painting based on that topic without the use of any reference material (so no cheating looking up on the web). Owning to the current social distancing restrictions, this of course was a virtual meeting.
My painting is based on a view looking down Gloucester Road and some dramatic shadows.

Only painted 3 night paintings in my life. Very difficult to do in Watercolour in my opinion, and the trickiest decision - how to paint the bright lights on the walls of the building. Also, you would think the buildings will be lighter than the sky? Maybe not in some circumstances as in this scene - really just after dusk rather than the middle of the night. I might try again but find a different way to preserve the light of the lights.

I am running another live, online watercolour demonstration on Sunday, May 24th at 6 pm UK time (GMT). Wherever you are, join me for this unique paint along, where we will paint a sunny scene in Tuscany, Italy. This will not be a recording. It is LIVE!
This online workshop is suitable for painters of any level. It will be a demonstration in Watercolor. I will go at a slow pace and describe with commentary what I am doing and the techniques I am using. The commentary will only be in English, and I will try and speak slowly because I have many attendees where English is not their first language.
All you will need is a good/reliable internet connection, and a headphone or PC speakers to hear my audio commentary. If you want to, you'll be able to ask plenty of questions as I go along. There is a $7 USD fee to attend this live session. It will not be uploaded to YouTube (as a Public Video) or available to anyone apart from the attendees who have paid to watch. The link to the recording will be the SAME link as you use to register!
What you will need (apart from paper and water)
The demo might be an hour to an hour and a half in duration (depends on how many questions/comments I get!). We will paint at a slow speed and in stages, so you can paint along with me if you want, or wait until you receive a link to the recording.
To view the source photo for the painting we will do:
Here's a photo from a previous session, with 'attendee' Jack Cwiek showing his setup, following me as I paint!
And this is what it could look like on your screen..
You need to register to attend (please do this as soon as possible and not on the day) and pay the $7 USD fee via the very secure link given. You will then be sent an email with the simple connection instructions for attending the demo (it is the same link!)...
This is the source photo. Click on it to download it:
Here is what previous attendees had to say...

2-hour demo via Zoom to 24 attendees from Wallingford Art Club. I had selected 4 possible French Street scenes to paint and we all had a vote on what I would attempt for the demo. Chosen scene was a pretty square in St Emilion South West France. Demo covered composition, and how to simplify the scene. Several watercolour techniques were covered and values.
Any art club out there who wants a couple of hours demo in watercolor, please contact me for details!

First live and online demo to approx 60 attendees to the Onda Creativa Art Group. Subject was a Google Street View image of Piazza della Frutta in Padua. You have to be careful with perspective when using a street view image as your resource - camera is higher than a person so you are looking down more on the scene. So you have to compensate and imagine you are lower! Takes a bit of practice.

St Ives, Cornwall, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
A bit of messing around and playing with warm against cool. So mainly a cool, dark sky against warm, lighter, roof tops and carry a bit of light red into the sky. Sorry to St Ives residents - I have changed the houses around a little!
Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Correlajo, Fuerteventura, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
A corner cafe scene dominated by a large date palm tree above. I suggested the spreading fronds with a bit of liberal splattering in a radial pattern. Quite a simple background with the kiosk and car painted around by a fairly light value.
