Demo Painting to Bristol Art Group - Kingswear, Devon

Kingswear devon demo to bristol art group t

Kingswear, Devon, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A recent demo to a local art group and an exercise in perspective.  This is Kingswear in Devon, with a road on the left going uphill and a road on the right going down to the ferry station on the river.  Plus added complication of the buildings in the middle ground and the other side of the river (Datrmouth town).  Tricky.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Corsham Art Society demo #1

Corsham art society demo corsham

Corsham, UK, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A recent demo to the Corsham Art Society.  A painting I did during a two-hour demo.  This was painting number 1, so done in under an hour whilst fielding questions from the audience.  It's the top of the town and a pretty row of cottages on a bend in the road.

LIVE and ONLINE Watercolour Workshop with Tim Wilmot - April 19th

* For the MAY event, click here

My Post (42)

I am running another live, online watercolour demonstration on Sunday, April 19th at 6 pm UK time (GMT).  Wherever you are, join me for this unique paint along, where we will paint a stormy seascape.  This will not be a recording.  It is LIVE!

This online workshop is suitable for painters of any level.  It will be a demonstration in Watercolor.  I will go at a slow pace and describe with commentary what I am doing and the techniques I am using.  The commentary will only be in English, and I will try and speak slowly because I have many attendees where English is not their first language.

All you will need is a good/reliable internet connection, and a headphone or PC speakers to hear my audio commentary.  If you want to, you'll be able to ask plenty of questions as I go along.  There is a $7 USD fee to attend this live session.  It will not be uploaded to YouTube (as a Public Video) or available to anyone apart from the attendees who have paid to watch.  I should be able to send you a link to the recording of the demo afterwards, which only you can see.

What you will need (apart from paper and water)

  1. A flat brush if possible, mop brush and a small brush for detail work
  2. A green like viridian green, neutral tint and some white paint
  3. Some masking tape and scissors

The demo might be an hour to an hour and a half in duration (depends on how many questions/comments I get!).  We will paint at a slow speed and in stages, so you can paint along with me if you want, or wait until you receive a link to the recording.

Demo Painting to the Bristol Art Group - Porlock Weir

Demo bristol art group porlock weir

Porlock Weir, UK, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

My first demo painting to the Bristol Art Group and a simple composition - easy background, cottages on the left, a boat, a figure and a light sign against a dark background.  And using a few different watercolor techniques - wash (of course), wet in wet, dry brush, and splattering.  Normally with the workshops I do, if it's a full day, we one painting in the morning and one in the afternoon.  So we all do our painting together and in stages - first I do my outline sketch, then the attendees do their outline sketch.  I then do my first or only wash, then everyone else does their wash, and so on.  It seems to work well as a format.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Boats Moored below Via Scali delle Cantine, Livorno, Italy

Boats Moored below Via Scali delle Cantine Livorno t

Livorno, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Another view of the boats moored along one of the many canals/waterways in Livorno, Italy.  As an artist who likes painting these sorts of small boats, it's a fantastic area to do plein air painting.  I made up the figures and the guy pulling on the rope.

Scali delle Cantine Livorno 2

Scali delle Cantine Livorno 2 p

Livorno, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A view looking towards the centre of the port city of Livorno, Italy, with the waterway on the right.  Quite a contrast in values in this one, exaggerated with the contra jour or against the light to have almost silhouetted shapes - light against dark or dark against light.

Boats Moored below Via Scali delle Cantine Livorno

Livorno, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Boats Moored below Via Scali delle Cantine in Livorno, Italy.  Just below the street and next to the canals are these walkways and quayside moorings for the local boats.  Beyond, are the substantial buildings, large apartment blocks lining the canal sides.  This shady scene was a boat repair shop - handy place to be by your customers.

Fortezza Nuova Livorno

Fortezza Nuova Livorno t

Fortezza Nuova Livorno, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The red-brown fortress walls as a backdrop to a marina within the city of Livorno.  I went fairly loose with the background, and just a few slices left light to indicate roof tops and so on.  On the right is actually a block of flats, but inappropriate to paint in every window/balcony etc.
