Calle san Agustin, Malaga, Spain

Calle san agustin malaga

Malaga, Spain, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

As I have mentioned in a few postings before, I normally avoid lighting/sun coming from behind me.  It makes for tricky shadows for figures and sometimes it's difficult to get a range of values.  But here I think the dark area on the left, the angle of the roof replicated with the angle of the shadow on the street helped.

Minehead Harbour at low tide

Minehead harbour low tide

Minehead, Somerset, 15" x 11"

Simple composition - go for 3 boats, all different sizes.  It's amazing how many colours you can sometimes find in the harbour floor.  Probably more than if it were the sea.  My reference photo was a dull December day.  I changed it to a sunny one!

Live, and Online, 2 hour Watercolor Workshop with Tim Wilmot, Sunday March 1st 2020 (ENDED)

I am running another live, online watercolour demonstration on Sunday, March 1st at 6 pm UK time (GMT).  Wherever you are, join me for this unique paint along, where we will paint the pretty town of St Emilion in France.  It's a popular tourist destination and a World Heritage Site.  This will not be a recording.  It is LIVE!

This online workshop is suitable for painters of any level.  It will be a demonstration in Watercolor.  I will go at a slow pace and describe with commentary what I am doing and the techniques I am using.  The commentary will only be in English, and I will try and speak slowly because I have many attendees where English is not their first language.

I might be painting this one using just three colors !!

All you will need is a good/reliable internet connection, and a headphone or PC speakers to hear my audio commentary (Worldwide Conference call phone numbers will also be provided if you want to connect by phone).  If you want to, you'll be able to ask plenty of questions as I go along.  There is a $7 USD fee to attend this live session.  It will not be uploaded to YouTube (as a Public Video) or available to anyone apart from the attendees who have paid to watch.  I should be able to send you a link to the recording of the demo afterwards, which only you can see.

The demo might be an hour to an hour and a half in duration (depends on how many questions/comments I get!).  We will paint at a slow speed and in stages.  So you can paint along with me if you want, or wait until you receive a link to the recording.

Registration will close a week before the event.

We will be painting this scene - the pretty town of St Emilion in France.  Old buildings, shadows and cars.  Oh, and we will also include some figures!:

Stormy sea in Viridian Green

Rough seas in viridian green

Watercolour, 15" x 11"

My viridian green in my palette was looking a bit lonely (I rarely use it), so I decided to use it up with an imaginary seascape scene.  I also decided to experiment with a new, cheap hake brush - bought for £1.  So the sky was kept soft, but I had some harder edges in the sea.  The painting was almost all done with this cheap brush.  And I managed to use some of my Viridian Green also!

Rue du Colonel de Chadois Bergerac - Shady Shopping Street

Rue du Colonel de Chadois Bergerac

Bergerac, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

I think every good watercolour painting needs at least one 'clean' line.  Something dominant to lead the eye to or towards a key object.  So here I tried this with the angled support to the shop blind.

Place du Marche, St Emilion, France

Place du marche st emilion

St Emilion, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

One of the main 'squares' in St Emilion, a famous centre of the wine industry, certainly in France.  Just playing on light and shade here in this square, with light catching the foreground and umbrellas, and the some darks with the shadows and the main tree in the centre of the square.

Stripy Blinds and Boats, Chania Harbour

Stripy blinds and boats old harbour chania

Chania, Crete, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A little bit of a made-up composition based on the Old Harbour in Chania, Crete.  It's a location I have painted a few times, and it's a composition I am happy with - background apartments, row of boats and reflections.  This time I made a feature of the blinds.
