Charco de San Gines - Arrecife

Charco de sans gines

Arrecife, Lanzarote, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The Charco de San Gines, The 'puddle' is an internal tidal harbour in the main town/city of Arrecife.  Quite tricky to get in the background - many detailed buildings and all mainly white or off white.  When all the buildings are white it can be sometimes a challenge to get right.  I kept it loose.  I have created a video of a similar scene here which I may publish soon up on YouTube.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Cabo Roig Marina, Spain

Marina cabo roig+

Cabo Roig, Spain, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A marina scene with the backdrop of some low cliffs, near Murcia, Spain.  Composition wise, I went with a wedge shape - the ridge of the cliff mirroring the reflections and narrower to the right.  You have to be careful with reflections.  Here they're darker than the objects above.

Misty Morning River Tamar

Misty morning river tamar

River Tamar, UK, 15" x 11" Watercolor

Inspired by a bit of Claude Buckle, I attempted this misty scene on the River Tamar.  A limited palette and concentrating on values and the simple silhouette shape of the boats and their reflections.  Water reflections are best done with a mop brush with a good point/edge.

Preserving the whites - Vernazza

Using the whites vernazza

Vernazza, Italy, 15" x 11"

An exercise in preserving the whites - leaving white paper for the very brightest areas of the painting or objects that will be white.  So my plan was to have shadows in the foreground, then contrast with that, a brighter area in the middle, especially the larger boat on the right.  Then some highlights on the harbour wall, bits on the far cliffs and some whites above the harbour which I fashioned into sea gulls.

Uphill Marina #3 - Getting the values right

Uphill marina river axe #3

Uphill Marina, Weston-Super-Mare, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A third painting of this lovely location on the River Axe.  I must get down there when the tide is in.  I think I got the values better on this one with the distant hills and stronger values in the foreground.  Might have been nice to add in a few more posts to help the composition.

Sherston Plein Air Painting #3 - looking up the High Street

Sherston plein air painting #3

Sherston, UK, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A third painting from my summer day trip to local village Sherston.  Love the bunting out in the street and a great tool to link two sides of the street from a composition point of view.  I normally avoid painting cars side on, but here I think it works by not making a big feature of them with all the trimmings and wheel arches and so on.

Last nights two hour demo

Tim Wilmot online watercolor workshop december 2019 end painting

Here is my effort from last night - my fairly regular online paint-along experience.  I had selected this Riomaggiore scene to paint - it had a good composition to start with and was a good exercise in different watercolour techniques, painting figures, perspective and painting all those little boats.

Next session is on March 1st 2020 and register here

Uphill Marina - River Axe #2

Uphill marina river axe #2

Uphill Marina, UK, 15" x 11"

A second painting of the River Axe at low tide as it winds its way around and into the Bristol Channel.  More boats appearing 'stranded' high up on the river banks.  Quite a reddish tinge to the mud here making it quite attractive to paint and a bit of warmth against the cools.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Sherston Plein Air painting #2

Sherston plein air painting #2

Sherston, Watercolour 15" x 11"

Second Plein Air painting on a summer trip to the pretty village of Sherston.  We don't often get hot days in the UK, but this was quite a warm day, you you had to work quick on the painting.  Luckily I found shady spot number 2, pitched in the shade of a large house looking up this street.
