Village Church Iron Acton

Village church iron acton

Iron Acton, UK, 15" x 11"

Composition - the more I look at this one, the more I question in my mind the purpose of the figure on the right.  I think the right hand side is too loaded with stuff - the church, the car and the large figure.  Maybe put the figure on the left, not so large, and have the shadows going across at an angle to connect, and not have the figure so obvious.  Perhaps the next one...

Verrucola - Bridge and Castle view - Plein Air from my Tuscany Trip

River valley and bridge Verrucola 2019

Hello everyone.

This was our day 2 location - the castle top village of Verrucola, high up in the hills. We were a bit unlucky with the weather. It rained in the morning, so we were confined to the studio where we painted a scene from Pisa. But after a hearty traditional Italian stew, we painted this pretty scene looking at the main bridge across the river valley and the view of the castle with its bell tower. And the sun made an appearance!

I tend to always paint around a figure and a car when doing a wash, even though in this case, some of the cars are in the shadows.  Then when painting the cars, I try to get the right value for the body, and they while still damp, carefully blend with a brush into the surround and introduce some darker shadows below the car.

2nd Plein Air painting at the 'WaterMill' - Posara main street and Bell Tower

Watermill posara tuscany 2019 2

Posara, Italy, 15" x 11"

My 2nd Plein air painting at the recent workshop I ran at the 'Watermill in Posara'.  Another plein air painting looking down the main street of the village and the church tower at the end.  Good practice of perspective.

Avenue Daumesnil Périgueux France

Avenue Daumesnil Périgueux France

Perigueux, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

I wanted a 'U' shape of darker values in this around the bottom half and up the sides, to frame a lighter area in the middle ground and background, then some darker verticals against that lighter area.  Inject a few figures - light against dark, dark against light works in watercolour so well I think.

Bristol Savages Sketch Night - All Our Yesterdays

Bristol savages all our yesterdays

Livorno, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Wednesday Night Sketch at my Art Society and topic given to the artists by the Chairman of the evening was "all our yesterdays".  So you have 2 hours to complete a painting based on that subject without using any resource material (no doing a Google search now!).  As I was in Livorno, nearly yesterday, I decided to do a sketch loosely based on the New Venice area - a bridge, distant building, moored boats.

Watermill in Posara - Tuscany Painting #1

Watermill posara tuscany 2019 1

I was the painting Tutor recently at the Watermill in Posara, Tuscany, Italy.  I did a couple of demos each day, so here's the first one, painted right outside the mill and looking up towards the hills to the North of Posara, the small hamlet where we were based for the week.  Unusually on this one, I painted the sky and background hills last!  Normally they're the first to go in, but this one I started painting the tops of the roofs first, down to the foreground.  I think it worked.  I wanted the soft edge of the sky against the hills and a hard edge of hills against rooftops.

Bridge over the River Ebra, Tortosa, Spain

Bridge over the ebro tortosa

Tortosa, Spain, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The iron arched bridge over the river Ebra.  Quote tricky to do these multi-span bridges with the complexity of all the metalwork.  It ended up being one of the simplest elements of the whole painting and a small bit of white paint on the arches hopefully gives the impression of the structure's curve.

Steps- Iron Acton Village

Steps Iron Acton

Iron Acton, UK, 15" x 11"

I took a few photos very quickly of a local village to me in the UK, Iron Acton, and this was an outcome of one of those photos.  I liked the steps, a little light hitting the tops and the old stone wall.  The shadows were going in the right direction as well.
