France Painting Holiday 2019 - Plein air #10 - Main square in village of Villefranche

France painting holiday plein air #10

Villefranche de Lonchat, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A quickie while waiting for the bus to take us home.  This the lovely main square in the village of Villefranche de Lonchat. Maybe complete in 25 minutes or so.  You get to paint really loose when you have a time limit or deadline.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

France Painting Holiday 2019 - Plein air #9 - Cafe Courtyard Villefranche de Lonchat

France painting holiday plein air #9

Villefranche de Lonchat, France, 15" x 11"

A shady courtyard at the back of a cafe in the French village of Villefranche de Lonchat.  I liked the shape of the shadows on the walls, like a 'V' shape and a brightly lit area in the middle.  Had some fun painting the stone work of the building - not to much detail.

France Painting Holiday 2019 - Plein air #8 Villefranche de Lonchat

France painting holiday plein air #8

Villefranche, France, 15" x 11"

Day 4 (Wednesday) and first plein air demo of the day looking up a street towards the centre of the village of Villefranche de Lonchat.  A very pretty village in the southern area of the Dordogne region.  All I can remember about this one was the bright sun behind me - so had to wear sunglasses when looking at the ultra-bright paper.  Wearing sunglasses when painting takes a bit of getting used to and must alter your perception of tonal values and colours.

France Painting Holiday 2019 - Plein air #7 St Emilion, from the Lavoir

France painting holiday plein air #7

St Emilion, France, 11" x 15"

The same spot as last plein air, I just turned 180 degrees and painted the view up the street.  I think I must have discovered a bit of thick lavender on this one for the shutters.  This painting was a bit rushed - I think I could have included some more people for example.

France Painting Holiday 2019 - Plein air #6 St Emilion, from the Lavoir

France painting holiday plein air #6

St Emilion, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A walk down to the lower part of town, carefully avoiding wine-tasting opportunities, and a nice shady/cool spot by the lavoir (French for wash house).  It was quite hot and the paint was drying quicker than anything.  A little view down the street.

France Painting Holiday 2019 - Plein air #5 St Emilion - Place du Marche

France painting holiday plein air #5

St Emilion, France, 15" x 11"

Day 3 (Tuesday) and my painting friends and I visit St Emilion, the most famous wine-growing area in the world.  Fortunately, the wine is too expensive to drink, so we had to paint!  This is my demo painting of the Place du Marche.

See the view we had on Google Street View

France Painting Holiday 2019 - Plein air #4 Castillon

France painting holiday plein air #4

Castillon, France, 15" x 11"

A real quickie Plein air before lunch on the second day of my French trip.  I decided that I was in quite a cool and shady spot, not causing any obstruction to market pedestrians, and so did this one looking down the street from the centre of town.  Painted in about 30 minutes.

France Painting Holiday - Plein Air #1

France painting holiday plein air #1

Saint Seurin, France, 15" x 11"

The market at Saint Seurin on a Sunday morning and the first picture as 'tutor/leader' on a Painting Holiday I organised.  So a contra jour to start with.  The location I chose was about the only spot where I could paint.  It was so busy!  With plein air painting, when it's a hot day, there is an argument to say, find somewhere comfortable first and then paint what you see.
