Live, and Online, 2 hour Watercolor Workshop with Tim Wilmot, Sunday 14th July 2019

I am running another live, online watercolour demonstration on Sunday, July 14th at 6 pm UK time (BST).  Wherever you are, join me for this unique paint along, where we will paint a beach scene with boats (see photo below).  This will not be a recording.  It is LIVE.

This online workshop is suitable for painters of any level.  It will be a demonstration in Watercolor.  I will go at a slow pace and describe with commentary what I am doing and the techniques I am using.  The commentary will only be in English, and I will try and speak slowly because I have many attendees where English is not their first language.

All you will need is a good/reliable internet connection, and a headphone or PC speakers to hear my audio commentary (Worldwide Conference call phone numbers will also be provided if you want to connect by phone).  If you want to, you'll be able to ask plenty of questions as I go along.  There is a $7 USD fee to attend this live session.  It will not be uploaded to YouTube or available to anyone apart from the attendees who have paid to watch.  I should be able to send you a link to the recording of the demo afterwards, which only you can see.

The demo might be an hour to an hour and a half in duration (depends on how many questions/comments I get!).  We will paint at a slow speed and in stages.  So you can paint along with me if you want, or wait until you receive a link to the recording.

Here's a photo from a previous session, with 'attendee' Jack Cwiek showing his setup, following me as I paint!

You need to register to attend (please do this as soon as possible and not on the day) and I will then send you a payment request from me for your $7 USD fee.  You will then be sent an email with the simple connection instructions for attending the demo...

Registration will close a week before the event.

We will be painting this scene - some small boats at Saltash in Cornwall, UK.  So an exercise in simplifying the scene, values and shadows and drawing boats.  Maybe some splattering to get the effect of those small pebbles.  Oh, and we will also include some figures!:

Bridge to the Ancona Cultural Centre, Italy

Bridge to cultural centre ancona

Ancona, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The bridge over to the cultural centre in Ancona.  A big fortress-style building as an island in the harbour.  Just a simple scene with a couple of boats and some reflections.  White gouache used for some highlights.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Riberac, Dordogne, France

Riberac dordogne france

Riberac, France, 15" x 11"

I have painted this town in France a few times but was playing around trying to get the colour of the buildings here in France.  In this one, I use mainly a combination of cerulean blue and burnt sienna to get the colour of the stone.  I tried to keep everything soft, with just a few hard edges.  Trying to paint in a loose style was a challenge with the windows and I think I fell into that trap with the windows on the right.  Too detailed now I look at them.

Tortosa Cathedral Spain

Tortosa cathedral spain (2)

Tortosa Cathedral - Spain, Watercolour 15" x 11"

I was going for a range of values in this one - the dark foreground shadows and then lighter background, plus some warms and cools with the burnt sienna and blues of the sky (mainly cobalt blue) and figures. Using a wet in wet technique, I got the soft edge between the sky and the buildings - so the sky wash was painted first and then a thicker wash for the buildings.

Via Arsenale, Livorno #2

Via Arsenale to livorno port Italy 2

Livorno, Italy, 15" x 11"

Via Arsenale, from the port to the town.  A busy road with lots of port traffic.  I ended up with bands of cool and warm - cool sky, warm buildings then cool foreground and shadows.  Not sure what was happening in the bottom right corner - I dabbed my fingertip in the still wet paint, ended up with a circle, so I started making abstract shapes in there.

Street Corner - Livorno

Street corner livorno

Livorno, Italy, 15" x 11"

When I don't know exactly where I painted this, I call the painting 'street corner...'.  I try to avoid have a large object, as part of a car on the immediate edge of a painting, so the bottom left, it's still in there but made into an abstract shape, to make it 'anything'.  Another of my 3-colour palette paintings.

Hilltop houses, La Gomera, Spain

Hill top houses la gomera

La Gomera, Spain, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

A row of hilltop houses in San Sebastien, La Gomera.  So the scene attracted me for - the brightly coloured houses on the ridge of the hill overlooking the town, and the barren scrubland below, with a lovely mix of greens and reds.  Then, every now and then, some dark shadows giving some deeper values.

Boat yard Quarteira Portugal

Quarteira, Portugal, 15" x 11".

A working port near the coastal town of Quarteira on the Algarve, Portugal.  A large red boat being serviced (if that's the right word) caught my eye in this one.  Quite a challenge with this scene with lots of details in the foreground to be simplified, and then the complex skyline in the background.

Scali Saffi, Livorno, Italy

Scali saffi Livorno Italy

Livorno. Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The New Venice Area of Livorno.  The canal here, if that's the correct word, takes a sharp right-angled bend to the left after the bridge. A lovely scene, with small craft lined up along the canal sides and the sun coming in from a perfect angle across the buildings.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.
