Experiment #2 - A log fire in watercolour....Hmmmmm

Experiment 2 - log fire

A log fire painted in Watercolour, 15" x 11"

So experiment number 2 - how to paint a log fire.  So I didn't paint flames as such, but some smouldering logs that have reached the 'ember' stage if that's the correct term.  Not sure what sort of painting this is - still life?  Plein air?  The paint dried a bit quick in front of it though!!

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Experiment #1 - Night Scene Venice

Experiment 1 imaginary night scene venice

Venice. 15" x 11"

I don't normally paint night scenes.  But I thought I might give it a go.  Having no reference photos to go by, I came up with this imaginary scene of Venice.  I just had to think about the main structure of my scene first - placement of bridge, buildings and boats.  Then decide where the light was coming from, to decide light and dark values.  Then just go for it.  Not sure it worked, or maybe came out too blue.

Bright morning on the River Tamar - Row of boats

Bright morning in saltash river tamar row of boats

Saltash, UK. Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Ooh I went quite blue on this one.  A painting based on a photo of mine taken down in Cornwall and a very bright September day - very warm for the time of year.  It's great that in just one location there are probably hundreds of painting subjects and compositions to be had, just by turning around.  I thought this one made an interesting composition with the curve of boats leading into the scene.

I normally paint the sky first....But not with this one

Place gambetta eymet towards church

Eymet, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The sky is normally the first thing I paint, but not with this one.  I wanted to go for a deep blue sky, darker in value than the buildings.  So I painted the buildings and foreground first, then went in with my dark blue sky, carefully painting around the outline of the tops of roofs.  It sort of worked.

I did a video of this.  Is it worth putting it up on YouTube?

Bristol Savages Sketch Night - This Happy Breed of Men

Bristol savages this happy breed of men

Weekly sketch night at my art society, the 'Bristol Savages', and the topic for the night was "This Happy Breed of Men".   It was English Night (we also have themed Irish, Scottish and Welsh nights too during our season).  So we have 2 hours to produce a painting based on that topic without the use of any reference material (so no cheating looking up on the web).

"This happy breed of men", is a line spoken by John of Gaunt in Shakespeare's Richard II.  Well quite an easy option I chose was to have a village scene, two pubs, one of course called John of Gaunt (maybe the other Richard II), and some happy people between the two!

No Entry - Montpon - A possible video?

No Entry - Montpon

Montpon Menesterol, France, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Did this a little while back and made a video of it but have not edited and added commentary yet.  Would it be worthwhile publishing on YouTube?  So with this painting, I took just a very ordinary street scene.  Very ordinary, but I liked the shade in the foreground, the light against the house on the right and the balance of the two no entry road signs.  Simple things!

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.

Bridge Via Arsenale Livorno Port, Italy

Via Arsenale to livorno port Italy

Livorno, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"

The Via Arsenale which connects Livorno City with the Port area.  I nice row of boats of moored up against the side of the bridge attracted me to the scene, as well as the reflections of the distant building.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms.
