15 minute sketch standing on the other side of the bay in Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, looking up into the town. 3 colour palette and no easel, so a little difficult keeping things stable!

Day 4 on last years painting holiday at the Watermill in Posara and a day trip to the nearby Cinque Terre. These are 5 very pretty coastal villages, all very different in size and character. This is Riomaggiore, quite a narrow, steep town which leads down to a small protected bay with a single slipway into the sea. So this is looking up into the town. I really travelled light on the trip - my 3-colour palette, two brushes (a mop and a small round) and a piece of corex plastic as my board. No Easel. So I held the board with my left hand and had the palette on some rocks to my right. I used seawater of course instead of fresh. Seemed to work okay.

Day 3 at the Watermill in Posara painting holiday 2018 and after the market had gone, left a very quiet town in Fivizzano, Tuscany, so we could wander around the streets and pick another painting scene. A little bit of drizzly rain stopped play around 4 pm. So I picked just an ordinary street corner and a small square at the bottom of Fivizzano. #pleinairpainting #watercolor #tuscany #stcmill
Day 3 last year on the WaterMill Posara painting holiday and a trip to nearby Fivizzano. It's market day on Tuesday, in the central square and around the Medici Fountain. So you are in a room with a bunch of fellow artists, and a blank piece of paper in front of you. Then someone gives you a painting topic. You then have two hours to complete your painting without the use of any reference material. And so this is the format of the Wednesday Sketching night at my Painting society, the Bristol Savages. The topic was 'healing'. Wow, quite a challenge to come up with a painting based on that subject. Well, I went down the route of a fast flowing river and healing as regards the environment and flushing away debris down the river.

Verrucola, Italy, Watercolour, 15" x 11"
Monday, and a visit slightly up in the mountains to the village of Verrucola. Here, we all positioned ourselves on or around the bridge leading into the village with lots of different painting options - the front of the village as I did, up the valley or a view of the mountains in the background. Lunchtime and a delicious hearty stew washed down with some local red wine. Ready for some loose painting in the afternoon.

Posara, Italy, 15" x 11"
The Afternoon on the first day and for the second plein air I decided to take our group up to the main road from the Mill and do a bit of street painting and a view towards the lovely village church and tower. The only minor hazard being on the road is to tuck yourself close into the side walls as much as possible to avoid the Sunday afternoon traffic. I also broke out my 3-colour palette on this one.

Fivizzano, Italy, 15" x 11"
The very first plein air picture from last years painting holiday where I was the tutor for a week in the lovely Tuscany countryside (Watermill at Posara). So this was an easy composition to get everyone on my course into the swing of things with a few simple shapes and colours, and if you wanted to, insert a few figures.
