Bristol Savages Sketch Night - "The joys of the open road"

Bristol savages the joys of the open road

Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Bristol Savages sketch night and the topic for the evening was "the joys of the open road".  So we have 2 hours to produce a painting and no access to any reference material (e.g. do a google search on your mobile!!).  Always a challenge and always enjoyable.  Most of the artists came up with a similar theme - a windy country road, a vista and some figures...

George Inn, Norton St Philip near Bath - Plein air from 2017

George inn norton st philip

Norton St Philip, Bath, 15" x 11"

A quickie plein air before lunch in the George - out with the Exiles last year and a painting expedition to Norton St Philip.  This was the painting after my YouTube recording earlier (when I filmed myself painting via a bodycam).  This was a slightly safer place to paint from being well on the pavement.  A nice view Contra Jour down the main street.  Painting done with my 3 colour painting palette!

Bristol Savages Sketch Night - "Nothing new under the Sun"

Bristol savages nothing new under the sun

Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Bristol Savages Wednesday night sketch night and the topic from the Chairman was "Nothing new under the Sun".  So we then have 2 hours to come up with a painting without recourse to reference material.  I took a typical French countryside view - a chateau, a few pencil-thin Italian Cypress Trees and some deep shadows across the scene.

Gate entrance to Corsham Court

Corsham court gate entrance

Corsham, UK, 15" x 11"

The impressive entrance to Corsham Court, a large mansion house in the town of Corsham.  From a trip with the Exiles Plein Air painting group.  We would have liked to have painted the interior, but there was a hefty entrance fee, so not sure what jewels lie behind those gates.  I took the shadow from the lovely leafy parkland behind as a useful foreground interest and blended a couple of figures into those.

3 Pedestrians, Chipping Sodbury

3 pedestrians chipping sodbury

Chipping Sodbury, UK, 15" x 11"

Quite a loose painting of Chipping Sodbury High Street.  Simple first wash starting with the sky and then the background - a weak yellow coming to a warm value in the foreground.  I was careful to do a bit of painting around the cars at this stage.  Then when that was dry, I went in with the darks - starting with the background definition of the buildings up the High Street and then creating the figures and foreground shadows to connect.

Demo painting to Chippneham Art Society - Summer 2017 - Lynmouth

Demo chippenham art society

Lynmouth, UK, 22" x 15"

A demo I did last year to the Chippenham Art Society.  Normally when I do demos to art groups I start the session by showing 8 possible scenes (normally photos I have taken relating to the chosen subject type) - in this case a seascape or harbour scene was requested.  Then with a show of hands and trying to get a bit audience participation the photo with the most votes is the painting subject for the night.  So this was chosen from a number of different harbour scenes - mainly UK ones.
