Property program painting - getting inspiration from a TV show

Property program painting

Watercolour 15" x 11"

Sometimes I just don't know what to paint, then watching a travel program or similar on TV an image just flashes by and just 'clicks' as a possible watercolour subject.  So it was with the above some months ago now.  I don't even know where it was - a Mediterranean country I guess, but it looked like a charming subject with a bit of everything - contrasts in values, boats, houses, colourful shrubs...

Tea Shop Laycock

Tea shop laycock

Laycock, UK 15" x 11"

A plein air done shortly after my YouTube 'Bodycam' recording  but looking in the opposite direction up towards the abbey and a pretty tea shop on the right hand side.  Only distraction were some Japanese Tourists asking directions for Harry Potter - I assume there was some exhibition on locally.  Anyway a fairly loose and quick painting of this pretty village.  Many painting subjects there.

Vicarage Lane, Norton St Philip - Plein air from 2017

Vicarage lane norton st philip

Norton St Philip, UK, 15" x 11"

A plein air I did last year on a trip out with the 'Exiles' painting group.  This was also filmed with my cheap little bodycam, but the traffic noise was even worse than my previous YouTube posting so I decided to ditch it.  Anyway, perhaps a hint of a quiet view here despite the busy road between me perched on the side of the road and the church opposite.

Red roof, Chania fishing port, Crete

Chania fishing port crete

Chania, Crete, 15" x 11"

Tricky part with this painting was getting the trees right - their edges against the background and the softness of their colour.  I let watercolour do what it does best - with combining wet washes a nice combination of colours appear and interesting bleeding patterns - just were I want them in the tree canopy.

Market Cross, Castle Combe

Market cross castle combe

Castle Coombe, UK, 15" x 11"

A Castle Coombe painting based on a photo taken by Jem Bowden.  This is the very centre of the pretty village in Market Place.  I might have adjusted the 'furniture' as they say, so some locals might not recognise the placement of things.  With the second wash for the buildings and road, I let the warm Cotswold stone colour blend down into the cooler road - easy with a slight slope with your board.

Bowl Inn Almondsbury

Bowl inn almondsbury

Almondsbury, UK, 15" x 11"

The Bowl Inn at Almondsbury - a typical British Village pub in a village in the South West of the UK.  This of course is looking across the front of the pub and the village church in the background.  Painted with my 3-colour palette and 2 brushes - a Mop and a synthetic round (for the more detailed touches).  I try to connect shapes/elements together - for example, back wall shadow to car, car shadow to figure and so on.

Corsham High Street, bunting 3

Corsham high street bunting 3

Corsham, Wiltshire, 15" x 11".

A third plein air sketch from last year's  Exiles outing to Corsham.  An interesting place to paint.  This was right outside a main post office and corner shop and I think a popular place for the locals, so you could overhear people's conversations and someone was talking on their mobile in their car with the hands free on and the car window down, so you could hear all that as well.  Well with plein air painting on the street side, you have to learn to ignore distractions and focus on the painting!

Priory Street, Corsham - A quickie before the rain came down

Corsham priory street

Corsham, UK, 15" x 11"

A real quick painting done in about 10 minutes on a plein air trip to Corsham Wiltshire in 2017.  I had a bit of time before our group retired for lunch and did this view of Priory Street.  No outline drawing was done and just managed to complete the painting before the rain came down - as can be seen with the splatter marks!

Corsham High Street, bunting 2

Corsham high street bunting 2

Corsham UK, 15" x 11".

A plein air painting whilst out with the Exiles painting group in the summer of 2017.  The bunting always seems to be out in Corsham.  From a composition point of view, a nice way to have something framing the top of the picture and connecting the left with the right.  This was a particularly sunny period just before the heavens opened (typical British Summer) and we all sheltered rapidly in the nearby coffee shop.
