Posara plein air

Main street posara

Posara, Italy, 15" x 22"

My first plein air demo at Posara, Tuscany in Italy.  A quiet village location with the only interruption at 11am with church goers leaving the local church behind us.  Well it got so busy we had to put out a warning triangle on the road to warn drivers of us all painting on the roadside.  Luckily no accidents and all painters returned safely to base.

Painted on Saunders Waterford, Cold Press, 300 gms paper.

Monte dei Bianchi - Tuscany

Monte del Bianchi village

Tuscany, Italy, 22" x 15"

A plein air demonstration painting from my 2017 workshop in Tuscany, care of the Watermill at Posara.   The Monte dei Bianchi is a quiet picturesque village with plenty of panoramic views across the surrounding valleys.  What attracted me to this scene (apart from being in the shade on a rather warm morning) was the framing of the view left and right, a focal point of the palm tree and shadow cast over to the wall.  I balance this and add in a bit more detail with a figure on the left coming into the shade of the church.

Painted on Saunders Waterford 300gms paper, NOT surface

Frome Valley Arts Group demo #2

The greenfield centre

Winterbourne, UK, 22" x 15"

My second demo to the Frome Valley Arts group.  The challenge here - taking a scene of some 1970's architecture and trying to make a half decent painting out of it.  So taking just a very ordinary scene and turning it into something interesting.  This painting I have donated to charity and will be raffled off by the group on their next fund raising day.  Good luck to the owner of the winning ticket!

Painted on Saunders Waterford NOT paper, 300gms.

Please contact me if you are an Art Group or Society looking for demos or workshops.

Bristol Savages Sketch Night - "Et nova et vetera"

Bristol savages et nova et vetera

Watercolour, 15" x 11"

Bristol Savages Wednesday night sketch topic chosen by the Chairman was "et nova et vetera" - Latin for new and old.  So I interpreted this with a scene of a village market being the old and a sign for a supermarket some distance away as the new.  Maybe a double message is the elderly figure walking towards us perhaps only being able to access the local market?  I don't know.  Done in our normal 2 hour time limit plus you're not allowed any reference material or photos etc.

Painted on Saunders Waterford Cold Press paper, 300 gms.

Tythe Barn Laycock Village

Tithe barn laycock

Laycock village, UK, 15" x 11"

Another plein air done on the same day I did my recent YouTube video with the bodycam strapped to my chest.  Well this was an afternoon painting and the bodycam had been surgically removed so a I had a bit more freedom again.  This is the end of East Street if anyone knows this pretty village and a view of the Tythe Barn.

Painted on Saunders Waterford Cold Press paper, 300 gms.

Vernazza Cinque Terre Boats

Vernazza Cinque Terre boats

Cinque Terre, Italy, 15" x 22".

I decided to go portrait orientation with this 2nd plein air in the fishing village of Vernazza, one of the Cinque Terre locations.  Quite a bit busier here being on the quayside and looking back across the bay to the square on the front.  The sun came out and you forget how quickly everything dries when you're outside compared to painting indoors.  Painted with my travel 3-colour palette.

Also, painted on Saunders Waterford Paper, 300 gms and Cold Press surface.

Tetbury Plein Air - Market Hall from the Snooty Fox

Tetbury plein air june #2

Tetbury, UK, 15" x 11".

My second plein air from a 2017 trip to Tetbury and this time a side view of the covered Market Hall, painted from the Snooty Fox pub (well I was just outside !).  I kept the right side of the street in the light deliberately simple and not too much detail.  The darkness between the columns of the market hall was done mainly with dry brush strokes of neutral tint and burnt sienna.

Painted on Saunders Waterford Paper, 300 gms and NOT surface.

Fivizzano Market Day

Fivizzano market day

Fivizzano, Italy, 15" x 22".

Fivizzano Market Day is Tuesday - the morning offers an open air market spread around the Medici fountain in the centre of town.  This was a plein air looking up towards the square and the bell tower of  Santuario Della B.V. Maria Dell'Adorazione.  I tend to not overdue the figures' legs if they're in deep shade.  Just a hint of them.

Painted on Saunders Waterford Paper, 300gms and NOT surface.

Vernazza Cinque Terre

Vernazza Cinque Terre

Vernazza, Italy, 22" x 11".

Vernazza is one of the 5 centuries-old villages that make up the Cinque Terre, on northwest Italy‚Äôs rugged Ligurian coast. Colourful houses surround its small marina.  A lovely day out and did this plein air from the shady part of the little bay here.  I think I nice feature for me to paint was the washing hanging out to dry, creating nice shadows across the building replicated by the larger diagonal shadows.

Painted of Saunders Waterford Paper, 300 gms, NOT surface.

Bristol Savages Sketch Night - "Ich Dien"

Bristol savages ich dien

Ich Dien, Watercolour, 15" x 11".

Bristol Savages Wednesday sketch night again and the topic from the Chairman - "Ich Dien" or I serve.  Very pertinent for time of year and whilst many of many fellow painters went down with a Military theme, I went off piste and interpreted this as waiters serving at an outdoor cafe.  A completely made up scene (we are given the topic by the chairman and then have 2 hours to complete a painting without the aid of sketchbooks or access to the internet etc...).  Is it Carcassonne or somewhere in Germany?  I don't know....
