Bristol Harbour

Bristol_waterfront

Landscape Watercolour of Bristol, 22" x 15".

A scene of the internal waterways of central Bristol, with a couple of pleasure boats moored up.  Like a previous harbour shot featuring a jetty, I don't think having the jetty in front of the boats is as good as the jetty behind - spoils the reflections a bit.  Plus having reflections lighter than the water colour makes for some tricky 'negative' painting.

Puerto del Carmen Port 3

Puerto_del_carmen_port_3

Landscape Watercolour of Lanzarote, 15" x 11".

These coastal cliffs rising above the harbour at Puerto del Carmen, have a lovely warm colour of the reddish brown lava rock and a nice contrast with the blue sea.  With hindsight, I think the jetty would have been better behind the fishing boats rather than in front, then I could make more of the reflections in the water.

Bowling Hill, Chipping Sodbury

Bowling_hill_chipping_sodbury_painting

Landscape Watercolour of Chipping Sodbury, 22" x 15".

A short hill just before you hit the main part of Chipping Sodbury.  I have tried to balance the cottages on the far side of the road with a couple of figures on the right.  In the middle of the road is actually a 'mini-roundabout', but putting that in the composition might have ruined it, so I've just added a few swirls as a suggestion.

Puerto del Carmen, Old Town 4

Puerto_del_carmen_old_town_4

Landscape Watercolour of Lanzarote, 15" x 11".

The old town part of Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote.  It's actually the car park by the harbour, but it's Tapas Festival time with the vendors' blue marquees in the background.  First step in this painting was to go over the white stripes of the pedestrian crossing with any old pigment left in the palette to 'rough it up' a bit - When do you ever see a pristine white crossing?

Thornbury High Street

Thornbury_high_street

Landscape Watercolour of Thornbury, 15" x 11".

The High Street in Thornbury South Gloucestershire, looking down the road and a distinctive pointed roof top building (think it's a shop).  The row of cars on the other side of the road and the buildings behind were just suggested in a loose style.  The street lamp was painted in one process with a dry brush stroke.

Calle Bailen, Madrid

Calle_bailen_madrid

Landscape Watercolour of Madrid, 15" x 11",

Calle de Bailen in Madrid, just past the Royal Palace in the centre of the city.  All the palacial buildings round here and you have to simplify the architectural details and the ornate street lamps - easier as it's in the background.  I introduced some figures left to give some scale and they're a little bit connected with the wall there.

Goose Green Yate, 5

Goose_green_yate_5

Landscape Watercolour of Yate, 15" x 11".

A simple scene here, a location near to where I live.  The Goose Green is nothing to do with the Falklands, but gets it's name from the Goose Fairs that were held a century or two ago.  There's an avenue of purple maples running along the road, making the background.  It's a popular place in the town for walking your dog, so a figure and dog makes for a bit of a focal point.  I had a bit of fun with the leaves in a loose style and plenty of splattering.

Calle Mayor, Madrid 5

Calle_mayor_madrid_5

Landscape Watercolour of Madrid, 15" x 11".

Another shot at Calle Major, a main avenue in central Madrid.  Centre of picture is an 'Once' lottery stall with it's ornate rooftop finial and there's many across the city.  I think the composition worked well with the bands of light and shade coming down the picture and the two people cutting over those bands and almost merging into them.

Approach to Yate Town Centre

Yate_town_centre

Landscape Watercolour of Yate, 15" x 11"

The approach to the centre of my local town and a bit of the old vs the new - the mid 70's shopping centre in the background with it's flat roof tops and the old White Lion pub on the left which must be a few centuries old.  While the building walls were still wet, I dropped in more colours to make them a bit more interesting.

Plaza Mayor, Madrid

Plaza_mayor_madrid

Watercolour Landscape of Madrid, 15" x 11".

A huge arcaded square in the centre of Madrid surrounded by restaurants and artisab shops.  The subject of cafe tables & chairs is a very complex one, made easier here for me because most of it's under shade so there's just an impression of people with silhouetted figures and the odd highlights.  Leave a few table tops showing the white paper here and there.  My drunken waiter makes another appearance.
