Hotel Victoria Ibiza Spain

Hotel victoria ibiza spain

Watercolour 15" x 11" on Bockingford paper 300g

The Hotel Victoria stands 50 metres from the beach of Talamanca, very close to the town of Jesús and the district of Ibiza Town.  It is a resort where you can enjoy the island’s peace and quiet or go further into one of the island's most cosmopolitan spots.  Dating back to the 1970's it pioneered the early tourist trade in Ibiza when it was a lot more difficult to be reached being quite some distance from Ibiza town.

Golden Horn from the Galata Bridge Istanbul

Golden horn from galata bridge

Watercolour 15" x 11" on Bockingford paper 300g

The Golden Horn from the Galata Bridge. Probably the most vibrant part of Istanbul with people everywhere - Locals going about their business coming and going on the many ferries that go up and down the Bosphorus, and the day tourists from the cruise ships docked nearby, visitng the historic sites and grand bazaar.  The Golden Horn is the western name for this part of the Bosphorus which has it's origin from the sometime golden glow off the water as the sun sets in the west.

Upper Church Road Weston Super Mare

Watercolour 15" x 11" on Bockingford paper 300g

The old part of Weston Super Mare, and Upper Church Road making it's way up the hill and offering great views across the bay and great views of this popular West Country resort in the UK. On the right is the Methodist Church with it's 'Gothic-like' tower.

Fish Market Uskudar, Istanbul

Watercolour 15" x 11" on Bockingford paper 300g

Just as you get off the ferry at Uskudar on the asian side of Istanbul is a wonderful fish market (Balikcilar Carsisi in Turkish) located in a dark tunnel going through the middle of a large building.  You could almost miss it as you walk by, but your eyes are caught by some brightly lit stalls showing the fresh catch of the day.  The main challenge with this painting was the curved ribs of the roof support and the decision to either not bother with the detail or concentrate on the perspective. I think I sat on the fence on that one.

Walk along the River Gilhao Tavira

Watercolour 15" x 11" on Bockingford paper 300g

The stretch of river front along the Gilhao River, Tavira on the Algarve, is a great place to walk down the 'Rua dos Cais' (baking hot in the summer), or sit at one of the cafes and enjoy the very picturesque setting. The Roman bridge, Ponte Romana, spans the river with low arches and creates gentle reflections on the water.

After some suggestions from some fellow painters, I decided to crop the picture taking out the left hand side:

I think it's better and just goes to show the importance of composition and I guess, planning your painting before you start!
